Hi guys a bunch of use are leaving on the 23rd on this trip. I know you have not booked but this trip is a reality and it would be great to have some of you along, we are 8 now so 6 bikes, like to get 3 more!

Well I think the time has come to get serious about this now.

What is happening next

Well let us start with what you have to bring.

Mattress, tent, sleeping bag, small fold-up chair and some comfortable clothes for the evenings. It is a 17 day trip but clothes need to be arranged so that you can get along with very little as space is also a problem if we start packing suitcases in the bakkie. I take 3 quick dry T shirts, 3 pairs of socks, 3 pair of Speedo’s as underpants, a track suit, takkies, a quick dry towel and some toiletries. Remember you will live in your bike gear for most of the time. I have a blow up pillow, no not that type, dirty sods! During showering you wash the days clothing and in the morning when dry you pack it again.

This is an adventure tour into a very beautiful country that has wide and expansive views, it also makes for some great motorcycling and camping in the wild. I have contacted a few places to overnight in lodges etc.. but most accommodation will be on ad hoc as the days progress and events will sometimes determine where we will stay. We are outside school holidays so accommodation should be no problem if we are not to remote.

Remember the fee includes every meal except for lunches and any drinks or snacks. All accommodation in basic self-catering or camping places. Remember some camping facilities are very basic and rustic. The roads we travel on are all minor roads and two or three can’t even be described as a road. We rely heavily on the back-up vehicle for comfort especially when we camp in the wild along Van Zyl and the Marientfluss. You bring your wallet for petrol, border fees, drinks, snacks and lunch if we can get one.

The back-up vehicle

Is a very capable bakkie that will carry not only its driver and passenger but all our gear as well. 100 litres of water and petrol, 50 litres of diesel, oil, spare tires which I provide (not new but capable to do a few 1000 kilometres if need be), two freezers, cooler box, food, some wood, our camping gear, table, first aid kit for man and machine and a small sports bag each for your clothes.
Myself and the bakkie will be in radio contact, I have a spare Kenwood radio which I can lend to someone in the group. Radios are always handy for obstacle negotiations.
Satellite telephone goes along as well.

On your bike!

Puncture repair kit, bring spare tubes even if you have tubeless tires, get some mushroom plugs at speedy, handy with side wall cuts.
Your daily needs regarding snacks and so on.
Camera.
Camel bag.
Ride with a helmet with peak as many a time you will ride into the rising or setting sun.
Always ride with full protective clothing.
Orange lens sun glasses, goggles or visors are very handy.
Lip balm and sun block.
If you have a communication system fitted to your bike bring your two way radio.

The trip!

We are leaving from Kirkwood on the morning of Friday the 23th,I will travel up on Wednesday the 21st and that evening we should meet somewhere to iron out the last little questions.

Trip in very very broad terms is as follows;

Kirkwood to the Namibian border,
Through Namibia all along the Eastern border with Botswana,
Around Etosha along the north of it,
Up to Ruacana and along the Cunene to the Epupa falls,
Then south to Van Zyl’s pass,
Up north again to Kamp Syncro on the Cunene river through the Marionfluss desert,
South to the Messum crater, Swakopmund, Walvisbaai.
South to Solitaire and then Ais ais and back to South Africa.

Hi Rony ....sounds amazing ...what is the cost ?

Will the backup be towing a trailer ?

So no panniers needed ? Basics in the backup ?

17 days sounds stunning.

Rony, I have improved slightly since my last ride with u. Can a newbie like me handle a trip like this? I'd rather wait till I have enuff skills to enjoy a trip like this & not suffer or hold the group behind. Sounds like an awesome ride!

The cost are R9850.00 for the intire trip, as above explained almost all cost are included. The Back-up is towing a trailer and no paniers required as you spotted. We are taking a bit more than the basics in the trailer. As this is panning out it looks like a good one indeed!
