Tuesday 4th March to Friday 7th March

The 2014 Bestmed Tour de Boland road stage event, which takes place from 4-7 March next month, is not a race for the faint hearted. The Tour sets the bar high and is aimed at riders who are looking for a serious, yet breathtaking challenge which will represent the pinnacle of achievement on their road bikes.

The Tour de Boland takes place in the week preceding the Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay Cycle Tour and presents a tour of almost the entire Boland region, stretching from the picturesque Stellenbosch and Franschhoek valleys, through Paarl and Wellington to the Swartland, Riebeeck Valley and Tulbagh.

The event opens its doors to open/seeded fun riders for the first time this year with the open seeded/groups taking off after the elite/junior bunch (1st bunch on the road) and the veteran’s/women’s bunch (2nd bunch on the road). The groups will take off in 5 minute intervals and the open/seeded groups will consist of 200 riders each.

The impressive Le Pommier Restaurant on Helshoogte plays host to the event, with the registration, first stage, second stage, and final prize giving all happening from the venue.

While finishing the event within the allotted daily time frames will be the singular focus for the open/seeded entrants, up front some of the sport’s finest riders will fight it out for top honours.

All of South Africa’s pro teams will be present and their main competition will come from MTN Qhubeka and a strong line-up which multiple world and Cape Epic champion Christoph Sauser has built around himself.

The Tour presents three fully fledged road stages (130km, 145km and 145km) and will open with a 21km time trial. The conclusion is on top of Franschhoek Pass - an iconic finish to the Western Cape’s premier road stage race.

Well marshalled roads with excellent road surfaces

Excellent race control

Some of the finest cycling roads that South Africa can offer

Each day's start and finish will be within 60 minutes of Cape Town, making it quite possible for local riders to sleep "at home" each night.

The stages

The stages of the Tour will include the towns of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl, Wellington, Tulbagh, Moorreesburg, Piketberg and the Riebeek Valley. The race will traverse some of the famous passes in the area, including Helshoogte, Botmaskloof, Nuwekloof and Franschhoek, and will therefore present a true road rider’s challenge.

The marhsals ride as the shepherds for the lead peleton only in each of the three categories.

So you will be finishing early with the leaders, not when the last bike gets home.

I will give a comprehensive briefing note to the marshals beforehand.

Lots of the big guns in local and international cycling (pro teams) will be there.

Please do not be intimidated by Tony's remarks.  He is referring to Cat 1 only

Herman % tony are taking Cat 1

Corrie is taking Cat 2

Danie is taking cat 3

Derrick is taking Cat 4

CAT 1  are out to get medals and Tony is rigth on ther button there, whihc is why Herman and Tony are in Cat 1

CAT 2 are out there to prove they should be in CAT 1 So Corrie's nerve & experience is needed there.

Cat 3, 4 & 5 are there to ride a challenging race and get a medal for finishing. These are mush more rustig, clam and scared to have an accident. they are much more cautious, less likely to try draft you or push the boundaries to lunatic levels.
