 Thinking of George Rautenbach.

Today a cyclist participating in the prestigious ROLLERCOASTER LEAGUE AND FUNRIDE went smack in his rear taking them both out.

This was the superfast section at the end of Boyes Drive as it merges again with Main road towards Kalk Bay.

The cyclist walked off and the pieces of his bike were moved from the circuit, but George is nursing injured legs.

Still not sure the full extent.

He did finish the course.  Don Jones was next on scene. Also on a 650.

Sorry to hear about your fall George, and all the best for a positive outcome.

This race was by far the most technically difficult to marshal of all the series so far.

Thanks to the marshals, the commisaires say they were very happy, you had you work cut out because some static course marshals were caught napping and the traffic police also had some problems.

You all did very well.

Both routes head out along Spaanschemat River Road and over the eastern side of Ou Kaapse Weg to Sun Valley.

The 85 km turns right towards Kommetjie and continues along the coastal road via Scarborough towards Cape Point, heading back via Simon’s Town, Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay and Boyes Drive to finish in Ladies Mile Extension with a neutral zone back to the venue.

Fun ride.

After climbing up and over Ou Kaapse Weg, the 49 km route continues straight over Black Hill before joining up with the long route at the Black Hill/Simonstown road intersection to head back to the finish.

And I hope the cyclist is feeling the pain so that he learns not to do that again.  It's bad enough cars not seeing motorbikes - but bicycles?!

That said, in the parking lot yesterday I turned into a lane and did not see the scooter shooting along.  He gave me the finger!  I was a bit traumatized, because I did look, and I saw no cars.  But that's the point - we are all looking for an absence of cars, which is why we should accept that cars will not see us even if they look.  So don't give me the finger Mr. Scooter - rather look out for the next car that is also not going to see you even though you can see the driver looking right at you.

Bicycles are dangerous things, I have broken more bones in my body on these contraptions than on a motor cycle for which I am eternally grateful to my Gaurdian Angels.

Think before you ink.

Trust is the most valuable asset.

I have the rest of my life to get old.

..... a bit harsh, I'd never want to wish pain on someone else

I have it on very good authority that the biker was riding in a position to the right of the group of cyclists. Going downhill, the cyclists started catching up to the biker and started to pace next to the rider and with speed were about to overtake..... it was apparently at this point that the marshal changed his line of riding, moved into the cyclists way/lane and took his front wheel out - and there being a group of them - the cyclist that hit the back of the bike just had nowhere to go.

Surely the marshals should be way ahead of the lead cyclists...?

Would be better to hear both sides of the story methinks...

The course commisaire is adamant that the cyclist was at fault. The race organisers too have told me that it was an unfortunate accident where a cyclist misjudged his line.

I hope the cylcist is ok and thta his damaged bike can be repaired, we all know how expensive a race bike is at this level of racing.

The cylcist himseff acknowledges his error.

All marshals were briefed on this race and on this particular downhill.

The marshal is skilled and has marshalled many times before.

I won't pass judgement, I was not on secne, it was unforuntate and I hope this marshal will be okay to participate at his station as marshal for the P n P Argus Cycle Tour.

Hope you're ok George.

Sounds a bit weird given that Andy gave us all an e-briefing. I simply stayed out of the way and to the right ... no incidences Smile.

Only response to being questioned on why I had a "medic" thingie on my armband was that everyone in the club knows Andy and thus no one will need first aid Wink ( I simply just wore it then so that the snake thing on the arm didn't show)

Was a great experience.. then again, was with the slow group.

I heard the someone saying to Salim that you are not allowed wearing the band if you not a paramedic.......

i turned mine so the sign was under my arm, no one questioned....

for those that have already read this you will notice a few edits....

appologies Safron Surprised - sorry no smileys with pink :)

anyhow, i had quite a bit of fun, early "off road" with oncoming traffic and not paying attention, lesson learnt, and made me quite a bit more aware!!

BTW, is it possible that we can maybe organise a group for the various levels of first aid training up to paramedic... i know its a lengthy process, but experience gained and good to have....

on a seperate note, where can we get the Dayglo bands, so i can get and always have one for when duty calls...

Andy, you need any more marshals soon? - im willing!!
