Hello everyone,

wanted to ask for some assistance in getting a little more aware on what could go wrong on long trip.

I plan on going Cape to Europe soon and would love it if more experienced people could comment on some what common issues. And what can be done about it whilst on the road.

bike is 2011 BMW R1200GSA ...43000km

I've been told about kick stand sensor going off potentially and needing to work around it.

tire pressure sensors

ABS disappearing on me :)

Fork seals?

... that sort of a line of thinking.

Thank you all in advance fr the help

I've been told about kick stand sensor going off potentially and needing to work around it.

Easily fixed by cutting the wires and rejoining 2 of them by trial and error and it will override the problem. The clever people will tell you which 2 to join.

tire pressure sensors

No big deal if they pack up, revert to a pressure gauge.

ABS disappearing on me :)

No issue> Most/many people switch the ABS off when they go "off" road anyway.

Fork seals?

No issue on the 1200.............but for a little mess!!!!!!

I would suggest you pack a tow-rope in your kit...

...allowing someone to tow YOU in a pinch...

allowing you to tow SOMEONE else in a pinch...

and allows much - easier bike recovery up a small slope, using the legendary "i push, you pull!' method!

Seriously, useful for fuel (out) problems, fuel PUMP problems (not uncommon), and obviously electrical problems...

Many different ways to tow, but maybe read Andy's posts on towing, foot-peg- to footpeg works well (best?), just ensure you can reach the footbrake, or rather, that the tow strap does not INTERFERE with the footbrake!

Hi,

You can buy a kick stand switch protector from Flying brick.

Mine cost R400 and was simple to fit.

You may also want to consider a small set of bike jump leads ( flying Brick or Wild at Heart), inexpensive and light to carry.

Plenty of cable ties of different sizes are always an essential part of the kit.

Thank you for the feedback so far.

I'll look at protector for kickstand. and maybe break fluid reservoir too.

I have talk to Chris at Flying Brick quite a bit... well, more like i irritate him a fair bit :)) Thanks Chris. I'll get a tow rope for sure.

For now, i need to sell my BMW expandable top box with mounting and replace it with a steel one :)

thank you all, please feel free to drop more thoughts on what i should be aware of.

Take a Leatherman, wire, duct tape (jaffer tape) and some thin steel wire.

I used to believe there was nothing you couldn't fix with cable-ties, but if your bashplate comes adrift, there is nothing to attach it to but the exhaust pipe, and wire is the business for this.  Also, it takes up very little space.

And off course, some Pratleys Steeel Putty - fixes a hole in the crank-case and a lot more besides.

Also look for Kevin Charleston's posts. He has a lot of experience in this regard.
