Hi

Just a video I found on the topic of lane splitting. Some interesting facts....

what does "cover your brakes" mean?

Let it be.

Means keep your fingers and right foot on the brake lever/pedal at all times.  It is the offroad thing of keeping two fingers on the clutch and brake levers, and the wheelie thing of keeping your right foot on the brake pedal.  That way you never snatch - your fingers are already there and can squeeze with control.

The video was fine but seemed to beg the point a bit too much.  Lane-splitting can be much safer than pretending you are a car, for many reasons they did not mention.  In short, since you will not be seen while you are part of the car traffic, ride outside of the car traffic.

Oh no!! This morning a guy on his BMW 800ST T-boned a car crossing the M3 down wynberg hill in front of me (towards town on Bishopscourt side)!! Looked pretty bad! This is the forth dude to catch it this way in the last year, there are a number of crossings down that end and in the morning peak when someone wants to cross, both lanes stop to let them through and speeding lane splitters dont notice and crash full steam into the crossing car! Dudes, PLEASE WATCH OUT FOR THIS AND DONT GO SO DAMN FAST!! The other day I stopped with the traffic left and right and as a truck was about to cross this DUM DUDE on his scooter almost piled into the back of me, abviously going tops and could not stop on time!! After the truck crossed, driver shaking his head at yet another stupid biker, I chased after the scooter bloke and gave him a real good "talking" to! (Must say I have'nt seen him since so I hope he decided to walk instead of risking his and my life screaming up the lanes like that)

I know this road very well. Yes there is a few invisible "off ramps" going towards town side.

I always slow down to a point of stopping at these intersections.

Like Alfs is saying please take care. A lot of eager people that would like to get to work on time.

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle

I know the drill there too.  Saw the stukkend bike on the pavement - caused a huge tailback to before the Constantia offramp.  Of course cars were getting edgy in the holdup, and lane-splitting bikes were in for a dodgy time.

Compound this with a chap on a motard, racing down the right-hand verge of the M3, causing cars to dodge inwards as he came past and putting legit lane-splitters at risk.  I had passed him and was trying to show him by example how to do it, but he was not receptive.  Probably thought I was just an old biker on a BMW who cannot ride, not realizing that only bikers who ride properly get to be old.
