Hi Guys

My 17 year old son has his practical test for the license booked for 22 November and will need some training to get through it on his 650 Dakar.

We live out in Helderberg, can anybody please recommend somewhere he can get proper training?

Thanks

thanks Marais,

I know of Billy de Beer, we were there for the introduction course.  He gave my son a good lesson but he doesn't seem to believe in the counter steer technique as I understood from what he said.  Whereas I would prefer my son learn that.

K53 largely tests a candidates ability to adhere to process and procedure (following the prescribed steps in a particular sequence) with a limited number of practical riding skills (clutch & throttle control, balance, braking) thrown in.

All of this is done at very low speeds, probably 20km/h or less - countersteering is not really a factor at these speeds.

Passing the K53 test (car or motorcycle) should be seen as merely an initial step to becoming a competent driver/rider.

Time spent with a K53 instructor (car or motorcycle) will ensure that the student understands and can comply with the test requirements in order to get the necessary "piece of paper". The training merely maximises the chances of successfully completing the K53 test. It does not make you a competent driver/rider.

Well put Tony.

I agree fully.

The likes of Billy de Beer come highly recommended both my wife & Son went through him for their bike licenses and rode his small bikes for the test. Both passed first time.

Both also went to Max Lange for more advanced rider training.

In fact if I recall correctly the went first to Max, then to Billy to teach them how to pass the test, max taught them to ride the bikes.

I have been given the name of a Stewart Gordon in Strand, he also comes well recommended

My wife started to learn to ride a motorcycle well into her 50'ees, she used Billy to pass her K53 and succeeded first time.  Counter steering is an advanced tequnique and is not appropriate for the K53.  Usually the priority is to become a legal rider and then delvelop into an all round competent motorcyclist.  This normal cyclist development is usually only circumvented when a younster comes through the racing acadamies before they reach the usual licensing ages.
