Inner tubes - F650GS

I've read on this website: http://www.flamesonmytank.co.za/offRoad.htm that inner tubes should be replaced every 20 000km even if they have never sustained a puncture. `Touch wood` - I've never sustained a puncture and will be putting new rubber on my F650GS on Monday, front and back. Do you recommend I ask for new inner tubes to be put in? Any views on heavy duty tubes? Cheers Corné

I always replace the tube with the tyre, regardless if it had punctures or not.

Do not take shortcuts on inner tubes! A few weeks ago I had an incident due to failure of my front tube. Cracks formed around a patch on the tube, which led to a instantanious loss of pressure while on a bend in the road. Needless to say, the bike went it's own way and falling a hole in the tar. I was lucky - I had all the gear on, travelled at a low speed and on a quiet road. I suspect that the cracks formed because I did not remove the transparent backing on the patch.

Thank you all for your feedback... Nicol, so you repaired a puncture and lost pressure due to patch failure? I will definitely ask Shane to put new inner tubes in for me. Cheers, Corné Kloppers 0849130391 ckloppers@gmail.com

Hi Corné, Shane automatically replace the tubes when you change tyres. The area around the valve deteriorate and may cause a blowout. He will show you the old tube and you will immediately understand why a new tube is required.

THIS is why you must be so carefull of the "other" tire shops !! Many quote lower prizes quite simply becuase they do not replace the tube or the old valve, or cut some other corners. Once you start asking all these questions they often end with a much higher price. Granted it is only the 80% that takes chances that gives the rest a bad name. ;)

Agreed, inner tubes a must. Little money for insurance. once installed and balanced, add slime and got for a ride to distribute. Saved me many a time. 2007 Dakar 2005 F650GS(hers) 2005 R1100S BCR 200? R1100S race bike (under construction) 2003 ZX6R (for sale) www.twowheels.co.za

Corné Actually the cracks formed around the patch in the tube itself. I had four patches, and around all of them crackes formed. I think this is due to wrong technique, but I am not going to try again. I am using slime now and have not had a flat since. The flats that I used to get was from normal dubbeltjie thorns. Slime is the ideal way to fix these. How many kilometres did you get on your tyres. My Dakar's rear tyre needs replacement, and I have only done 7000km. The front is still fine.
