FYI:

My 2001 1100r just died one day while riding!

my original post is here : http://www.bmwmotorcycleclubcape.co.za/help-my-horse-sick

Just dead!

Long story short, it was a failure of wiring loom to the sensors and the tdc hall effect sensor. Symptoms included, dead and intermittent spark, bouncing tachometer [while motor not running], backfiring [when it did manage to run], no fuel pump/pressure to the injectors.

The dealers wanted R5k for a new one. I noticed that TTFAN had posted about the similarity between these sensors [there are 2] and the cam shaft sensors on the Mk4 Golf. I popped down to Suburban Spares here in Ottery and bought 2 @ R200 each. They have different numbers on them but other than that they are identical to the BMW ones. I worked off an awesome PDF that Charles Oertel sent me and attached to my original post. That PDF really saved the day for me! I fitted them to the new silicone coated wiring loom and they work beautifully and my horse is back up and running! :)

I hope this info helps someone else as much as it helped me, man am i stoked to be back up and running!

If anybody wants more info just send me a message, glad to help.

Regards Marc.

Tx Marc for posting, Yep, Charles certainly is the man when it comes to these sort of issues. I think He likes to tinker as well, sort of under-cover. Of the 2 which one was installed.

Think before you ink.

Hi Rene, when you say "of the 2 which one was installed", i assume you are meaning TDC or BDC sensor? if the answer is "yes", then i replaced them both as well as the wire loom from the 2 sensors to the 5 pin plug.

that the answer you were looking for Rene? anything else, just give me a shout.

Hi Marc, thanks to you and Charles for this info. I have a 2004 1150GS LE with 89,000km on the clock. On Saturday going past Ocean View the bike spluttered once , like running out of fuel. About 1km later it died. The motor cranked but would not start. I had to tow it home. This morning it started. At this stage signs seem to be leading to the Hall Sensor unit.

I have been over the pdf. Charles added to Marcs post and have a few questions for those who have done this:

1. If the bike started this morning does this mean that sensors are okay and its the wiring which has gone?

2. Where to obtain the 22AWG Silicone rubber or TFE wire?

3.Pin removing tool ( did you make one or can one do without it)

4. Timing test box. If you have marked the position of the sensor do you still need this.

5. If you need to replace the sensors do you need to make the riveting tool or can one use a rivet gun/pliers?

Lastly if one needs all the special tools any chance that I can borrow them from someone. Preferably in the Southern Suburbs.

Many thanks in advance

Bruce

Hi Bruce

I have not (yet) restored my old HES - at the time I was under time pressure for a trip so had it replaced by the dealer.  The old HES is in the garage along with about 50 other projects waiting for me to get a round tuit.

The bike running/not running with the HES is affected by moisture.  Did you wash the bike on Friday or Saturday?  Or did you ride in the rain or through water?  If not then perhaps you have problems with the fuel pump or injectors.

However:

  1. The pin removal tool: I made my own, from some thin brass tubing (3mm diameter or so).  You can get it from a hobby shop (rc models etc).
  2. The wire - no idea, maybe Google.
  3. Not sure about the sensors and the timing box.

Thanks Charles, I had washed it a few days before as i had used it as a fire engine during the recent fires and needed to get all the ash off, used a bucket so no pressure.
