I met a gentleman last week who says he changes his oil every 2000 km and says his motors last longer I personaly leave it to the dealers to do at service time thats 8000 km between his change and mine. Does anyone have any input or is there any research showing any benefit to an early oil change.

Flipper, I believe if a dealer offers you a two year warranty with unlimited mileage and only require oil change every 10000km then stick to it. I have however on one or two occasions changed the oil myself before the service period before a long distance tour or after a weekend of hard riding, but I reckon every 2000km is a waste of time and money.

I cast my vote with Bobdev - for those who actually take their bikes into the dirt. Some (of the better) car manuels actually specify different maintenace shedules, based on type of use. All BMW engenise, except the K, rev very low. These low revs combined with normal on road use means an oil change at 10 000 km is an overkill (although I would never exceed this distance between oil changes). The continued higher revs and low air speed over the engine in the various off road conditions means the engines work harder and the oil operates at higher temperatures (shortening its expected life span). An oil change at every 5 000 km (with an oil and filter change on the scheduled service) is cheap enough.

I have heard about guys that changes the oil filter halfway between services. Their argument: Oils today are of such a high quality and do not loose their qualities that quickly, that is why some cars can be serviced every 30 000km only. So changing the filter more regularly, you ensure that you get rid of the dirt, it there was any present. Just another opinion. Arno
