With some quality input from Shane Hoskins and manufacturing skill supplied by Mike Adendorff of Rockfox I now have a nifty bracket to mount a HD Digital Recorder on the 1200GS.  A neat sturdy bracket that nestles just behind and above the front right hand indicator.  This makes it is easy to reach to activate and is partially protected in case of one of those club sucker awarding moments.  Photos attached.  Contact Mike on 072 4618472 if you want to order one.

Get yourself a Drift.  You won't need a special bracket because the camera is a better shape for action filming, and it does not need to be mounted level.  Also, it has a remote control, so no need to be able to reach it while riding.

These pictures show two things:

  1. the quality and attention to detail of the Rockfox guys, and
  2. why GoPro is not my preferred camera.

Go Pro is the market leader in Action Cams, also available with remote. Thought the innitial post was to show show a nice locally manufactured camera mount bracket. Your comment of why you dont like GP was in my opnion uncalled for, the guy has a GoPro, which you clearly dont like!

Many prefer other products  over Drift, as I do.

Oh, I do not use a GoPro, but a Contour+ HD with Gps tracking that show on Google maps my position, speed and elevation aaaand it is wifi with my Iphone.

I am sure the Contour could also mount on the roxfox bracket, as would the Drift;-)

Thanks for your input tbk.  My take is that you also don't like the GoPro as much as the camera that you have.

However, it is a common misconception that being a market leader means your products are good.  Being a market leader means only that your marketing and sales is good.  Some examples:

  • Microsoft is the market leader, but Apple's products are superior (as are many other companies')
  • The whole Beta vs VHS debacle
  • Blackberry vs Android and iOS

And yes, my bias shows because it is in my nature.

Still, the Rockfox guys rock in every way.

Dear Agony Aunt

Please check whether it should be "marketing and sales IS good" or "marketing and sales ARE good"

(By the way bias is not your nature, being obtrusive is.)

I read the debate about which camera is best with amusement this morning as the camera in the pic is not a GoPro, it is an Australian Otek HD Digital Recorder that cost me the princely sum of R1299. That is about 75% less than you would pay for one of the popular brands.  It is a 5 Megapixel recorder with  127 deg wide angle lens, can take 32 GB SD card, operates between 1080p and 720p depending on the shooting mode.  Besides capturing  video at 30 fps it can be set to take stills at 3, 5, 10, 30, or 60 second intervals.  Its size is 70x45x30 mm and weighs 90g. It is without a doubt unashamedly a GoPro rip off.   Nice place to start experimenting with the process of recording and editing your own material and if the bug bites one can consider upgrading to one of the expensive premier products.  In conclusion, this is all waffle as the post was to show the neat bracket that can be used by any of the products that have a bicycle handle bar bracket.

Thanks Trevor.  There is no doudt about enjoying the riding.  The recording and editing stuff is a big learning curve and only time will tell if this will give me as much pleasure.  But without trying I'll never know.

Hi Eric, Is this recorder available locally and if yes, where? Don't know where to fit it on my 1200 RT though...

Fortunately I don't know the difference between bias and obtrusive but they both sound so negative!

Rather just keep quiet if one cannot contribute in a positive way! Thats why I rather keep quiet...

Nice mount, GoPro bit too expensive for starters, so lets hear from you please.

IS it is.  Could have been clearer if I had said 'marketing budget, and sales department, is good'.

I bought this Otek DVS-5G5 camera on a special offered by "Daddy's Deals", the marketing arm of Kulula airlines and do not know of a local supplier.  I did some research before buying and the Otek product range is well established in Australia and seems to be of a reasonable quality.  It  seems possible to purchase a camera via direct mail with couriering.  This will be more expensive than the R1299 that I paid.  Check out this site http://www.productreview.com.au/p/otek-dvs-5g5.html for the exact details.  Their price is Aus $  250.  Just be aware that if you pick up a problem with the equipment fixing it would be problematic if not impossible from SA.  A risk that was prepared to take at the special price.
