Ladies and Gentlemen,

There was some interest at the last club meeting around the (BMW) GS Trophy, the will be held in Montagu in 2018. The official website appears to be gstrophy.co.za.

The dates have been set as 9 - 13 May 2018.

I'm going to definitely pencil this one into my calendar...

I've registered already and looking forward to it, but there seems to be a problem with the event organizers. Since day one I have been trying to book some sort of accommodation through them and I must say, they are pathic. Who ever at BMW asked them to handle this event made a big mistake. They do not reply to emails so I missed certain accommodation opertunities.

Where will everyone be staying? Camping or B&B?

Hi All,

A friend of mine lives on a farm a couple of kilometers outside of Montagu, in the KOO Valley region, which may suit your purpose. He has cottages, but I'm not too sure about the camping. Anyway, feel free to contact him directly, as I am sure he can assist. His name is Wayne Rittmann - oh ate too, 4 ate 6 - 2261, or email on waynerittmann@gmail.com

I am struggling to find reasonable accommodation in Montagu - everything in my price range is already taken.

I am not sure I should camp, given my current state of health - is anybody looking for people to share a cottage or something?

Charles, I may need accommodation for THREE pax, so just putting it in the mix.

If you hear of something, then let us know, and maybe Flying Brick can share in the costs, etc?

Cheers

Chris

Hi Chris,

Sounds like a good idea - I am expanding my search to 4-person cottages.  Will let you know what I find.

Charles (and others): we have a cottage with two bedrooms in Montagu, each with a queen bed. So it's suitable for two couples, but not really four riders. Since we know you (and probably whoever's coming with you), we're also quite happy to accommodate some of the group in the two spare bedrooms in the main house (also each with a queen sized bed).

AirBnb link with some photos - but please note, the cottage is being renovated at the moment so it will be considerably improved by the time of the GS Trophy!

Farmy vibe but in the town, i.e. walking distance to everything. Also very biker friendly with garaging for bikes and large outside braai at your disposal. Would love to see you again and catch up regardless..

Has anybody received confirmation emails with route details for for the event yet?

I have also not heard anything further from Donford CT about the ride to the event. Is it just me?

Nope. I haven't heard anything. I asked about both on Saturday and they said they would call me on Monday but no phone call.

Flying Brick MAY WELL be unable to take up the booked and paid-for shared accommodation with Charles Oertel, since we cannot get any info for BMW H/O about our planned attendance - or not -, despite writing and phoning since November. Pity, but it si what it is.

So, will CHAT now to Charles, and if he is ok with it, we may have to try and on-sell 3 x accommodations, and cancel our planned attendance at this event ...More later...

Ja, this is typical BMW SA organization - the customer comes last and is privileged to be allowed to participate in their events.  Every time I have been at a BMW event, I walk away thinking this is the last time - it must be me who is the stupid one.

Seriously BMW SA - it is now a week to go and we have no idea of the routes and are unable to plan our rides or make sure our GPSs have the routes loaded.  And as Chris says  - as a vendor he needs to plan all sorts of logistics but cannot get hold of the organizers.

And accommodation is still a fuckup - no amount of explaining that you block-booked it all so it would be available for the GS Trophy is useful without telling us how to access the block-booked accommodation. And your link on the website takes us to the general page and treats us like any other (non-GS Trophy) person (i.e. there is no available accommodation in Montagu during the event).

just checked: first e-mail sent in August, then re-sent this (same) e-mail in September 2017:

Hi Skye

I would like to apply to be a VENDOR (motorcycle accessories) at the 2018 GSA Challenge at Montagu, in the Cape – could you kindly let me know how to go about applying?

thanks, Chris & Team: Flying Brick Motorcycle Accessories, Cape Town

021 510 6455 info@flyingbrick.co.za www.flyingbrick.co.za

and this one, back in Feb, offering a value-add service if they did NOT want us exhibiting product, which I would understand:

Hi George, Chris here, of Flying Brick Motorcycle Accessories https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfqZdTFNSsY – would like to request permission to exhibit product at the forthcoming GS Trophy, in Montagu – we are Cape-based, and exhibited at the recent Cape GS Trophy qualifier…

We are LARGELY (but not solely) geared to accessories for BMW motorcycles in particular, with a 90% dual-sport/adventure focus…

We envisage exhibiting innovative and COMPLEMENTARY products, that do not compete with the existing BMW offering.

We can also assist with LOGISTICS (manning a ‘station’ or similar. Or even providing a value-add service, too? Helmet storage? Visor cleaning?

Thanks for considering us, Chris Grinton (Director/Owner) & the Team

(and then a silly video, because life should not be ALL serious! : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDc8Ex7FlfA)

Chris.

Ok, so now I am feeling more than slightly pissed off.  I  stuck with a cottage with 3 extra beds (and the extra charge), because BMW Motorrad is incapable of responding to a simple request.

And because the idiots block-booked all the accommodation in town, I could only get accommodation out of town.  So I am paying an extre R3k to attend the event, and not able to enjoy it much due to being out of town.

So I try to get hold of BMW Motorrad via the contact form on their website.  The clever bastards have made it so the only way you can contact them is to send a request for a dealer to contact you!  You have to give all your contact details, and check an agreement that they can spam you with their marketing BS and notify you of new models and/or sell your data to others before you can click OK.

I swear my next bike will be the new Africa Twin.  I AM NOT YOUR BIATCH BMW.

thanks, Charles - there should be no extra charge for you, since Flying Brick paid for our portion of the accommodation back on 08th March - just want to make sure we are all good?

Cheers! Chris

Hi Chris

We are all good - but I don't want you guys to be out of pocket either.  If I cancel now, we lose the deposit, which is half the total amount.  So you guys would get half your money back.  I am looking for alternative accommodation right now.

Hi Charles,

Having not too much to do nowadays i am considering writing a book on how BMW Motorrad treats smaller Dealers and indirectly BMW customers They dont seem to care too much (just look at the track record of BMW On Call for instance) So let me know if you would be interested in writing a chapter on your experiences ?
