Hello Forum
I'm always short on time and want to keep myself happy on gravel. What gravel roads or legal play areas are there really close in to Cape town?
Thanks much!
I floated the idea of a collaborative map-building exercise for just such a need some years ago but it never went anywhere. Anyhow, perhaps some of these places are of use to you:

PM me if you want a link that will allow you to edit and add to the map!
The Western Cape keeps track of the dirt roads, and the conditions thereof here:

Hi you gravel road lovers
You are all so spoiled in the Western Cape
Just five minutes out of Durbanville you can ride gravel to Paarl mountain with a choice of return roads.
Really super for a quick morning run.
There are several options, Here's how to find your next ride.
Go to any map program, locate Fisantekraal airstrip outside Durbanville in the direction of Paarl.
Using this as your datum to place you in the general region, just work your way back to a lekker start point of your choice, through the Spes Bona farming areas to strat from either Durbanville itself or to Kontermans kloof.
There are two or three nice options.
So choose a route from the start point, via Mellish station through the dairy farms just before fisantekraal airstrip, now you need to traverse 6 to 11 km of tar to get over the Kliphuewl road line direction Paarl where you will see several choices to get to Noorde Paarl.
Then 5 km into Noorde Paarl to the lekker Jan Philips drive up onto Paarl mountain exiting in Coutrai, paarl South.
Down gravel back onto Main road Paarl.
Stop for a brekkie at any of a zillion bike friendly eateries.
Then re-mount and choose a road you did not come in on back towards Fisantekraal,
You will not be disappointed.
You will see many other adventure riders and many many mountain bike cyclists out exercising.
Gravel there, and tar return is also a great option.
If there is interest, le tme know i organise a group ride for beginners and a group ride for hard core off-tar on just these routes.
The former is a gentle ride on good gravel and the latter is much more adventurous but nly for those that like a faster pace though some 'Stuff" which includes water crossings, mud, sand, stones, sheep, cows and even corrugations.
You can arrive in Paarl, calm and relaxed or you can arrive in Paarl, yapping and snapping and waiting many minutes for the hype and adrenalin to get out fo your system.
You can even extend your gravel ride on fabulous farm roads to Malmesbury.
The Helderbergers have also such fabulous choices for gravel ten minutes after starting up Sir Lowry's pass.
Thanks very much Tian, some stuff really right in town! Yes please add me - derekroyd@gmail.com
Safe riding
Derek
Thanks Andy, many options to look at. IF you do an organized ride I'd be there.
Ride safe
I just drooled a little bit...

Hey All, I'm going to be in Stellenbosch for a meeting early Friday AM, and would love to do a mid-morning gravel ride with a local that has some flexibility. Happy to buy lunch and a beer after!
Warm regards,
Ian
Hi Ian,
sorry, but I leave 05h00 on Friday for a 120 day trip into the Richtersveld on the Nam border line.
I am sure you could meet a few peeps at the Donford motorrad dealership in Stellenbosch and they cna show you some awesome roads..
120 Day?! Wow.
Andy, thanks for the note. If you've even just got a single suggestion for a nice trail back to Cape Town that will likely suffice.
Otherwise, definitely will pop into Donford there.
