GPS warning

Yesterdag there was a report on the radio regarding GPS's. The gest of it was that a trend has been spotted where a vehicle is stollen or hijacked - with the GPS in the vehicle. Apparently the thieves sell the stolen vehicle and then keep the GPS. A few weeks later the house of the vehicle owner is broken into. They reckon that a person that can drive around in an expensive car has some nice "toys" at home. All they have to do is to switch on the GPS and search for the addresse called "HOME". The reporter warned people to NOT store their home adresse as HOME. If you do not know where you live, then store it under another name, but NOT "home". Maybe store your mother-in-law's adresse as "home". ;)

I'll set the Home Co-ords to the police station closest to me - I should be able to find my way home from there...

Urban myth, but probably still a good idea to disguise your home location a bit.

There was an article in yesterday’s newspaper on this subject. It's probably just as big of a myth that peoples luggage are ransacked at O.R. Tambo or being followed from the airport after they have declared what valuables they have and where they will be staying etc. Rather be safe than sorry, this is South Africa mate! It is one of those things that is virtually impossible to "prove". Yet, one has to wonder if it is worth taking a chance on this?

You give SA criminals too much credit, lol. Just kidding... I'm not disputing the fact that this ''could'' happen. Just that it's quite unlikely.

Or set it to the pesky neighbour with the crazy dogs and trigger happy wife.

Not as crazy as it sounds. You may even provide them with the remote control to you security gates AT HOME, which is most often kept in your car

Pieter in the event of a hi-jack you give them voice directions to your house, with the remote for the garage, AND all your house keys. Daniel did you possibly mean: "sexy neighbour with the trigger happy husband"? ;)

Padlangs, I agree. If you cannot find your home without GPS, you shlould not go out. Rather use police station or shopping mall near your house as GPS "home"

LOL guys, you're not meant to drink and ride so finding your house on the GPS shouldn't be broadcast too widely! :-) I suppose though for those who use their GPSs for routing we shouldn't use "Home" as a waypoint and if your GPS is capable of recording tracks it would be an idea to clear them regularly.
