I'm of the opinion that the taxi industry is detrimental to this whole country, especially in terms of crime. This story makes me sick: Taxi hoots, drives over schoolgirl 23/02/2009 23:09 - (SA) Virginia Keppler, Beeld Pretoria - A Grade 11 pupil died on her way to Garsfontein High School in Pretoria on Monday morning after a taxi first incessantly hooted at her before hitting her scooter from behind and driving over her. Bernadine Kruger, 16, died on impact. She was on her way to school from the house of her father, Koos Kruger, 51, in Garsfontein when the accident happened at about 07:00. Hugo Vermaak, who was driving along Atterbury Road, saw the accident happen between the Jacqueline and General Louis Botha Drive intersections. 'He hit her full-on' "I was driving in a westerly direction. The traffic was heavy and we were moving very slowly. "I saw the girl on her little scooter going in an easterly direction. She was in the left-hand lane. "Then I saw the taxi speeding up behind her and hooting at her. Just as she wanted to change lanes, he hit her full-on. "I saw her mouth open when he hit her. She fell and then he drove over her. It wasn't a pretty sight," Vermaak said. After the accident the traffic came to a complete standstill. Many people jumped from their cars and ran to Bernadine to see if they could help her. A last hug Her family and best friends arrived on the scene shortly afterwards. Her school shoes were lying next to her body and her silver scooter lay in the road close by. Her mother, Elsabé Homan, 44, from Montana in Pretoria, knelt for a moment at her daughter' s body on the tarred road. "I had to see for myself. I gave her a hug for the last time. She was my best friend," she said. Homan said her daughter was a soft-hearted person with hundreds of friends. She loved dancing and achieved top marks at school. Bernadine' s brother, Danie, 18, stared at his sister' s partly covered body in shock. "She was my legend, because she kept her life clean and pure," he said. Crying loudly and sorrowfully, a group of her friends and her brother knelt a few metres from her body to pray. The police immediately called a trauma counsellor to the scene to counsel Bernadine' s family and friends. Sergeant Lynnette Erasmus, police spokesperson, said this was one of several trained counsellors from various churches in the Garsfontein police ward that were called out in circumstances like these. Taxi driver not arrested yet The Garsfontein High School support team, which includes a psychologist, also called two dominees to the school to assist with counselling. The principal, Dirk van Zyl, said shortly after people started calling with the news that one of his pupils had been hit by a vehicle, he sent the two deputy heads and two teachers to the scene to find out who it was, because Bernadine was not carrying her schoolbag. "It was a terrible shock to all of us. It's an unbelievable blow. She was a wonderful girl and achieved very good marks," Van Zyl said. Erasmus said the police were investigating a charge of manslaughter. The taxi driver had not been arrested yet because the police first have to complete their investigation into the accident, she added. - Beeld http://www.news24.com/News24/South_Africa/News/0,,2-7-1442_2474990,00.html

I read this article this morning with a general look of horror plastered on my face, so much so that my colleagues thought to ask about my general health. Something needs to be done. If I somehow manage to get the 1000 miler (as Cheesy referred to it) back on track - I think some form of awareness campaign or support for the families involved in tragedies like this need to also benefit from any monies raised (if any).

Terrible! The unfortunate reality is that it seems like the road and transport system belongs to the taxi's. If a taxi hoots or try to push in... let him! Your life a worth more than that moment of rage. Keep if safe! Regards, Corné

Thanks for giving us this story Cloud , it's always more emotional when you hear vivid details about the person who died , and the accident itself , and this concerns us as bikers .My condolences to her friends and family. Death is so much more horrific when it happens to someone so young and when it involves such brutal violence by another person. I am ,however, not in the least shocked at the taxi driver's actions. Our roads have become a jungle and it's a constant battle to stay out of harm's way . 2 years ago someone lent me one of those old little scooters when my bike went in for repairs , but my nerves only lasted 3 days when I refused to ride it anymore. The scooter couldn't do more than 60 km / hr and 80 on the downhills. I had a truck squeeze past me with mm's to spare whilst on a bridge ,I was hugging the bridge wall with no place else to go . I had cars and taxi's whizz past me and no space to go. I rode with my eyes glued on the mirrors and at times rode off the road to avoid accidents. If there was no shoulder I would sit on the centre lane ( lane splitting ) and watch cars speed past me on both sides. Never again !! And ironically scooter riders wear the least protective clothing too . Poor Bernadine , my heart goes out to her in her few precious final moments. With her sheltered upbringing and young age she never had a change to develop a warrior mentality to survive the jungle out there. My friend who has been living in Aus for 6 years now cannot even drive a car when she visits here as she is too terrified. She is right , it has become a dog eat dog world on our roads and we have become slowly acclimatized to it . The new Rapid Bus System will go a long way in alleviating the taxi problem, as then the taxi drivers will be paid a fixed salary like the bus drivers , and not have to speed to make enough money for the day , but that will take years to implement as the short- sighted taxi drivers are striking against the new system. The new system will hire them back so they have nothing to fear, but they see it as taking away their livelihood. The new system will probably also provide for proper drop- off places so that taxi drivers can't stop and drop passengers just anywhere. ''"4 wheels move the body,'' ''2 wheels move the soul"''

It's a matter of race and culture............ If the races were reversed and a white driver had done the same thing to a black girl on a bicycle in a black area? THEN, I can assure you they (the by standers would have necklaced the driver of the vehicle then and there. Not one of the community would have "pimped" on the other and they would all say that they did it. This would leave the law as useless as it was currently stated. I wounder how far we will be pushed to become uncivilised? When will we adopt the opposite cultures attitude of "an injury to one is an injury to all??" The policy of the ANC prior to 1994 was to bump and push us until Africa had zero colonist left. Unfortunately I am African and this is as much my home as anyone's. What grieves me is the amount of good people leaving South Africa because they feel threatened. This ultimately dilutes the good folk trying to make this country work. What scares me most is almost every morning, whilst driving to the office, I hear of an accident involving a motor-cycle. Just last night a biker hit a cow on the N2 and was killed. This heard on Cape Talk this morning. It really is scary stuff; take care out there. Pete da Mann

Actually the scary part is that the cops don't know what happened to the cow, or what type of bike it was. They found 2 firearms on the scene - and so are now looking for a pillion. Their logic is confounding.

Am I missing the plot here, Firstly my sincere condolences to the family of this little girl. Now, the driver hoots, crashes, and the proceeds to drive over the victim? No mention that he stopped. Yet the authorities have not arrested anyone, and are investigating investigating a charge of manslaughter? Were there no eye witnesses that saw this? surely to goodness there were as there is a detailed report here. Hooting the crashing then driving OVER a body is surely a premeditated murder. And if he didn't stop Hell that has to be murder? I love this country, but hells teeth I am getting seriously worried about the lawlessness here. Sorry folks just astounded and shocked by this tragedy, Shaded, when we get this off the ground I agree, Keep your feet on the pegs, and your hat on - Safe riding to all

According to the news, the driver was questioned at the scene and his details taken - BUT ALLOWED TO CARRY ON HIS BUSINESS, until statements from witnesses had been taken! WTF? The detective then called the idiot and he was arrested when he came in to the police station. So, the driver clearly has murderous intentions and uses his taxi as a deadly weapon. Yet, at the scene of a murder, he's given back his weapen and sent on his way. Just lucky he never came upon another scooter rider through the day, isn't it? Frankly, I think the police from the scene need to spend their days with this idiot being love slaves to the inmates at Pollsmoor. Lawrence I couldn't agree more!! Do they say what he was arrested for? I bet it is either culpable homicide or manslaughter. To hoot then purposely ride down a motorcyclist should carry a murder rap in my opinion. Lets face it, he saw her, he acknowledged her presence, then rammed into her and rode over her. That sounds very much like premeditated to me. And as you say, as for the police, okay off you go we'll call you later. No compassion, no feelings, no regard for right and wrong. Try riding away from a roadblock and see what happens... imagine, " hi officer here's my details, call me later, I'm in a bit of a hurry." There simply isn't any consistency to justice at this point. The driver was arrested for Culpable Homocide at 13:00 yesterday. To insult to injury another girl from the same school was also knocked of her scooter yesterday - bruised but no broken bones. YES, also a taxi ....

Guys, I've been racking my brain (the little piece that still fires in the right order) about how to raise awareness and reduce these occurences. I think I'd like to use the Ride for the Love / Love for the Ride initiative in conjunction with possibly actually visiting schools and having a chat with them at ground level (I know it's in no way the fault of the little girl who was killed, or the one who was bruised, but maybe if we teach them the advantages of ATGATT and some safety tips and techniques, we can help save the next little girl) - there could even be a slogan worn on High Viz vests that says something like "Look out for your sons & daughters" or "I am someones Son" for the boys and "I am someones daughter" for the girls. Help / Input?

Hmmmmm now you have hit on something.... Forget the awareness of riding a long distance, how about a type of road show? Stopping at Schools, giving a little presentation, maybe some graphic pictures (not to graphic) Imagine if we got enough bikes together the impact it would have arriving at a school. I like the ideas Shaded, Riding a long distance isn't going to create half as much impact as arriving and stopping at a school to promote an issue !!! We could start off locally and progress from there to going deeper into the country ?? Just another thought. Keep your feet on the pegs, and your hat on - Safe riding to all

I think this is a fantastic suggestion, but, like the N1 initiative, take it to the streets where the stuff happens. If people are available when schools close, to possibly man the main routes and escort these young riders, teaching them road awareness along the way. Next I would agree with getting into the schools. We need to show these riders just how inconspicous they are, how motorists treat them and, most importantly of all, awareness of all that's going on around them. I think too, that if we could get some flyers printed, I would happily spend time at the school gates (principal agreeing of course) and constantly promote the awareness aspect of riding (and taking additional rider training). I think too that we need to do something about approaching the taxi associations and attend their meetings. Might be a little contentious at first, but slowly I think the constant awareness may just get a small message across that saves a riders life. Hi Lawrence, Thanks for volunteering to go to the Taxi association meetings - it's appreciated. Who can we ask to take this to ThinkBike for their input - I'd love to hear their suggestions on the above? Flyers - great idea - take it one step further though - wait till all the scooters are parked and pop a flyer on the scooter whilst they're in class. Visiting schools early morning - possibly taking over an assembly or two is going to be a lot easier than trying to teach 100 kids going in different directions how to ride through traffic - your idea will give more life skill transfer, but I don't think it's as practical - besides - how many kids do you know that WANT any form of extra class once the school bell rings?

Good idea Shaded, unfortunate but true, a lot if not most of these kids need educating, although in this case the victim did not do anything it seems to endanger herself and that is what makes one so angry. And you have raised this point before in another thread. Every morning one sees a hoard of kids (and grown ups) on scooters, no ATGATT at all, speeding between the cars with seemingly no fear for the consequences. I have had a kid on a Ching Chong 200 come flying up behind me and try to overtake me in my lane of a traffic circle. Unfortunately for him he came second thanks to BMW training (Stand up, Look... etc) as I went right over him and did not even fall. He had, no licence, no ATGATT, and a helmet that I think was intended for BMX or something. So I reckon it would be a good initiative, possibly even on behalf of the club to visit schools and yes, show some gory pics, explain what tar does to flesh and try to educate folks on defensive riding techniques. I think the main idea is to get into their heads that the area between the cars on a public road is not a race track and there are no prizes for getting to the next robot or where ever first. There are however many opportunities to win the booby prize.

UPDATE on Girl Killed by Taxi... Killer taxi driver gets bail 02/03/2009 13:36 - (SA) Pretoria - The minibus taxi driver who allegedly drove over and killed 16-year-old Bernadine Kruger was granted R1 000 bail in the Pretoria District Court on Monday. Percyval Matji's application was not opposed by the State on condition that he remained at his address in Nellmapius Street in Mamelodi. In his application Matji told the court he had a previous conviction of driving without a licence. He was released on a fine of R250. The matter was postponed to April 6 to allow for further police investigation. Matji allegedly killed Kruger last Monday when he drove over her as she was riding her scooter to Garsfontein High School. The court heard that Matji had remained on the scene and had given a statement to the police. He was arrested at the Garsfontein police station a day after. He faces a charge of culpable homicide. Matji's family, seated in one of the front rows of the court gallery, looked visibly pleased that bail had been granted. - SAPA Tracey "Pillions are the brains behind the operation"

Johannesburg- Motorists caught committing certain traffic offences in Johannesburg would be arrested on the spot rather than fined, the city's metro police said on Monday. "This occurrence of antisocial driving behaviour has resulted in a number of accidents with a number of lives being lost," said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar. "Fines are not deterring motorists from bad behaviour on the roads, they are still insulting the law by being reckless. "The plan has already been put into action. Just today, we arrested seven taxi drivers for offences in Hall Street, in the CBD." Arrests would occur if motorists were caught skipping red traffic lights, driving facing oncoming traffic, passing on the shoulder lanes, using emergency lanes and disregarding pedestrians.

Johannesburg - Civil rights group AfriForum is urging motorists to use their cellphones to photograph lawless taxis. This would enable the laying of charges of reckless or negligent driving against them with the police, AfriForum chief executive Kallie Kriel said on Tuesday. "AfriForum created an e-mail address, taxi@afriforum.co.za, to which the public may send the pictures, as well as details of the event, after which AfriForum's legal team will formulate a complaint on behalf of the public for submission to the SA Police Service," he said. AfriForum would also monitor the investigation of the complaints.
