I had a problem when I tried to remove the two bolts which secure the top box support bracket to the frame on the back of my 1200GS. Both bolts were stuck due to corrosion. (Water and dirt gets into the threaded area from openings in the frame side which I suspect causes the corrosion.) While trying to remove the bolts, I twisted the head of the one bolt off. (There were sure traces of metal fatigue which must have happened over a number of years.) The other bolt was so tight that I could not move it.

Somebody here in Stellenbosch recommended that I contact Emile Rautenbach from Peninsula Thread. He offers a mobile service and specialises in removing broken bolts, broken glow plugs, etc. He also does fitment of helicoils, inserts, and so on.

Emile came to my house and managed to get both bolts out. He was knowledgeable, efficient and a pleasure to deal with. I am also happy with what he charged me. I can recommend him.

Thanks, Johan - what was his call-out fee and what was the charge to remove the broken-off bolt and the other seized one?

the total bill was R320. His call-out fee was R200.

I do not know if this expensive or not. I have nothing to compare it with. For me it was reasonable... and it came with peace of mind.

(I also saw the other side of peace of mind. I stopped at a few places here in Stellenbosch before I got to know of Emile. Nobody could help me except one cowboy who wanted to weld a nut onto the broken bolt in order to screw it out. Needless to say, I preferred to move on. Fast!)

That's quite a reasonable price, all considered.

The welding option is not an uncommon approach (when all else fails), the trick is just to shield the surrounding area on the bike from welding spatter & to ensure that the heat doesnt melt anything in close proximity.

On the welding option, that was exactly my concern - the plastic parts and paint around the bolt. However, the cowboy's approach was of a bigger concern... Smile
