Does anyone know of any good reliable and up to date road maps - off-road and on-road? I've heard of www.tracks4africa.com, where you can buy maps of various areas. Does anyone know if these are any good and, most importantly, up to date? There's also Google maps, of course - this appears to be an annual fee. Then there's obviously the GPS route, if you have one.

T4A is verseker die roete om te gaan as jy na onbekende roetes op soek is. Hierdie is alles tracks wat deur deelnemers van hul forum self gery is en record is. Wat my aanbetref by verre die beste in AFRIKA. Het van Kaapstad tot in Tunisia met T4A sagteware en Garmin 276C gery. Alles beskikbaar op http://www.t4a.co.za/

This is not a shop per se but the office of Chief Directorate: Surveys and Mapping which supply all maps official maps. Choice of 1:100,000 and 1:50,000 but latter is very localised. 1:100,000 best options. Beware, they are not 100% accurate despite what they say. I have two good map books that I find quite sufficient. If I find a new road in reality, I ride along it anyway to see were it goes, but generaly they are all there in the two books. Detail is OK (can't see the dog turds in the path though....)They do show dirt / tar roads and are quite up to date. TOURING ATLAS OF SOUTH AFRICA by Sunbird Publishing (Blue and red cover)bought at Wordsworth or CNA SOUTH AFRICA ROAD ATLAS by Map studio (grey / white book with red top border)Cape Town sale office and show room, 021 510-4311, off Black river parkway. (www.mapstudio.co.za) Both are a little bigger than A4 Donald Own a GS and never run out of road.

My Zumo has streetmaps of SA and Tracks4Africa on it. If it was'nt for the T4A then we would have missed the magic private road i chose on our Middelpos trip. After our trip, i checked to see where we were on my 1:250 000 topo map but could not see it. The streetmap of SA shows a lot of dirt roads, but no private roads. Best to combine the two. Regards JR

Thanks guys - I feel a lot more confident about purchasing T4A. Possibly I'll have a look at Halfjob's version. We also generally follow unknown roads anyway - it would just be nice to know where we were from time to time and, of course, if we're going to end up close enough to some fuel!

Go check out www.themaps.co.za for great maps of the western cape (also one of Baviaanskloof). The day drives one is particularly good (though the range is a bit biased toward cars, not bikes). --------- Faster than summer fruit through a short granny
