CAPE TOWN, South Africa - Nearly 9500 BMW motorcycles are being recalled by BMW Motorrad in South Africa as a precaution to stop their rear wheel falling off.

A similar recall will occur in North America where nearly 49 000 motorcycles in the US and Canada are being called in to replace flanges that hold the rear wheel in place.

The aluminium flange can crack if their retaining bolts are torqued too tight, reports BMW.

The recall affects multiple models, among them them:

2005-10 R1200GS and R1200RT
2006-10 R1200GS Adventure
2007-10 R1200R
2007 R1200S and K1200R Sport.
2005-07 R1200ST
2008-09 HP2 Megamoto
2006 HP2 Enduro
2008-10 HP2 Sport
2005-08 K1200S, 2006-08 K1200R and K1200GT.
2009-11 K1300S, 2010-11 K1300R and 2009-10 K1300GT

CRASH IN SPAIN

The Associated Press reports that the problem was discovered after a 2004 motorcycle crashed in Spain in August 2014. BMW says the rider and passenger suffered bruises and scrapes.

An emailed reply to a query to BMW SA about the recall said: "Based on ongoing quality analysis, it was found that in the case of incorrectly carried-out maintenance work excessive torque may be applied to the brake disk bolts or to the nuts when changing wheels.

"This is contrary to the values specified in the BMW Motorrad repair instructions or operating instructions. Cracks and damage can occur in the wheel flange as a result of excessive torque.

"BMW Motorrad has therefore decided to exchange the wheel flange with a more robust part as a precaution."

The recall is expected to begin from April 21 2015. Dealers will replace the aluminum flange with a steel one at no cost to owners. Make a booking with your local dealer...
