For Neil. Hi guys, after a chat to Neil sometime last week he requested that I tried to explain some dirt riding techniques in simplistic form. I am hardly the be all of dirt riding so I will do my best to explain. When I get home I shall start putting it together and post in the morning as I am having a moment with my friends from "Helkom" and cannot post or mail from home until they get things together.

OK, here goes. Pencil on paper, COG, its all good but out there one is faced with a myriad of constantly changing parameters. On the ground our bike wil at time perform acts that will baffle even Newton and Einstein. The best part of this is that with practice, experience and confidence in yourself and your machine you can make this this happen time and time again, at any speed over nearly any terrain. Grip = Traction = ControlGrip = Traction = Control GripsandingGripsanding I fully understand that not all of us ride the same way and that experience varies but the basis remains the same. I am going to try work through from the top down and will break it down into sections, please feel free to question or add comment at any stage. I RIDE THEREFORE I AM!

BODY POSITION. Correct body position is the foundation of riding well. If you build a motorcycle you start with the frame, so to when learning to ride better, you start with your frame. Your body. STANDING ATTACK POSITION: Rough ground Up hills Down hills Sweeping corners Jumping 1)Stand crouched on the bike with knees slightly bent. 2)Grip seat with knees. 3)Elbows up so arms are inline with the forks (variation allowed). 4)Head above handlebar. 5)Look ahead. SEATED ATTACK POSITION Cornering. Start/ pulling away. 1)Stay forward on the bike or or close to centre. 2)Crouched & leaning slightly forward. 3)Elbows up. 4)Head above bars. 5)Grip seat/tank with legs. 6)At least two fingers on controls. 7)Look ahead. When traction is not available, slip your backside back towards the middle of the bike/seat. This adds weight to the back tyre. Keep your head above the bars to keep traction on the front end. REMEMBER Double your suspension - STAND UP. Getting central takes strain of the body and keeps even traction front and rear. Always grip with your knees. Relax your handgrip on the bars when possible. Always focus ahead. I RIDE THEREFORE I AM!

without any intension to hijack freak may I add and you can elaborate When traction is lost and things go pear shaped get devorced a lot of people get hurt buy trying to save the bike. In stunting we learn to seperate our love for the bike and add love for our bones. There are ways of falling maybe freak can do a section on it .

No worries, my posts are intended as open discussions so any thoughts or ideas are welcome. If creating a new post is necessary we will just place a link from the current post with a heading. I will give what you said some thought , the problem of course do you ride it out or do you let go. No two falls are ever the same. Once I get done with "Get a grip" Ill have a go. I RIDE THEREFORE I AM!

A little of the subject but I would imagine one may to some extent be able to hijack ones own post. I have been standing back from the forum and lurking a little for a while. Reasons being , I really enjoy the forum community and the people, many of them are clients. These are some of the best people I know. In respect to the club, which I have never joined or gone on rides with probably for the same reason as Flipper and a few others, as there are some who may dissaprove of the antics I may get up to. (Imagine the comments and faces as I wheelie a R1200RT into the sunset with Slinky on the back). Having been a specops instructor and operative for 14 years has probably left me with language that may at times be colourfull to say the least, but I have no overinflated vision of my self image. I respect others and allow them free reign to express themselves, respect is important, you earn it. We are a growing community of people with a common passion, do not stifle the growth but encourage it with metered control. We do not all act or ride the same way ,we are not clones and are each special in their own way. Charles is probably the best moderator and webmaster on any forum I have come accross, when he feels the need to interject "back off" he knows what he is doing. In the end lets do this together and keep it good as this is to the enjoyment of all. As to the the threadjacking and expletive issues that are doing the rounds, it should be monitered but not jumped on at any oppurtinity. Afrikaans and english are fantastic languages and a grasp and the ability to write ,express ,amuse and entertain with literature is awesome fun. If I may use an example: Donner&Bliksem on my 1200GS (inie die woordeboek is hierdie twee woorde) Man am I in trouble. #%^&&^%#@$%%^ (must be banned for that one for sure). Gonna kick your ass.(You would need to own a donkey for me to be able to do this off course). So lets sit back and enjoy the ride. Have a great day and evening. With love and respect. I am hoping freak will join us soon on the street. I ride around 2 hours practice sessions a day . However street stuntin is ellegal even if you are in a deserted parking area so we move around alot I was caught last week by the police in ottery industrial area and now I have to find a new place to practice. I have a roll on lawn farm so I train on the grass with a pit bike every day. When we find a new spot I'll let you know .If anybody has a empty wharehouse ?????? if you want to see some amazing stuff check out www.youtube.com and search stunt wars or circle wheelies.

Thanks Flipper, I only ever see this stuff on youtube so an invite to a clandestine gathering would suit me just fine. I'll keep an eye open for a PM when you're ready. "Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul"

ok, so it is really nice to know that there are some guys out there with bm's that also have some hooligan in them. i think i am more enthusiastic than gifted, but would love to ride with freak or flipper sometime and watch and learn. so i don't ride a bmw, i drive one, i think someone has the footer saying 4 wheels move the body, 2 wheels move the soul, they should change it to bmw's move the body, ktm's move the soul hehehehe. nah, just kidding.

Get a grip cont. Its an abreviation ok! A motorcycle is a rider active vehicle, meaning that a huge percentage of control originates from moving your body around on the bike, again a lot of external influence from terrain etc will factor here. Not moving or moving the wrong way can ruin traction, upset the suspension and tire you out real quick. When you learn to move around the bike you start to discover safe, smooth and fast riding. While Freakonaleash is thinking in preparation for Part 2 ... a Honda and a KTM on the BMW site? What is the world coming to???? Welcome KTM950, even though your handle/psuedonym/nom de plume (you chose depending on age/exotic nature) is somewhat confrontational! I must say I thought long and hard when I was buying. The KTM was an attractive option, until I realised that I'd have to wear an orange shirt! Seriously it's good to have diversity on the forum, welcome! IF YOU CAN THINK IT YOU CAN ACHIEVE IT

If you can dream it you can do it!
