FUEL LEAK R1200GS 2007

My GS has a fuel leak on the lefthand side top of the tank. There is a black cover and underneath is what I think is the fuel sender unit. I had discovered that it was full of petrol and dripping down to the ground. This was only when I fill the tank the night before going on a long trip. The bike was serviced by BMW 20km's earlier, but I don't think they would pick this up.

It seems the green O-ring is not doing its job anymore. Will I be able to repair this myself?

Greenleader, this subject has come up several times, have a look under the appropriate headings, I'm sure you will find something there.

Think before you ink.

Hi Greenleader

BMW has been doing a recall due to this problem. I suggest you chat to BMW. Have a look at this post:

Chat with your favourite BMW Dealership, they will fix it under a recall campaign. I had my GSA and both my buddies on their R1200GS's were done by Donford. Good service received from them.

Don't leave it, the fuel could overflow onto the hot engine and exhaust and ignite

Thanks guys for your replies.

I did phone the worshop manager today in Bloemfontein at Sovereign BMW and left a message. I will go to them tomorrow and have a chat. My 2007 R1200GS has had its 20 000km service just over two weeks ago. From what I read regarding this fault, it is a lot of money if you have to replace it yourself.

Thanks Tony and Kevin.

I took my R1200GS to Sovereign BMW in Bloemfontein. It spent 2 weeks there and they replaced the whole fuel pump unit. All costs to BMW. The amount was R5100. No more fuel leaks for me anymore Wink

Regards

Martin

The same goes with everyone else, check if you have leaks, and even if not go speak to your friendly BMW dealership, they will sort you out. You don't want to destroy your bike (or more) if it can be prevented, for free!

Kevin, others,

I'm not going to say "IGNORE" any leaks, but,  I had a SEVERE leak\failure on my old 1200 GSA 2 years back, and rode my bike from Town to Parklands with fuel literally POURING out the right side cover, and all over the motor\exhaust\head\plug. The only damage was the right hand side wind deflector plastic melted at the screw holes and it promptly fell off, but I didn't catch fire or anything worse.

In hindsight it was a stupid thing to do, but I wasn't prepared to leave the bike on the side of the road. I did a lot of testing and fiddling with that stupid sucking pump inside the right hand lobe of the GSA's tank, and ended up installing an electric submersible Bosch pump to overcome the "missing 4 or 6 litres" of reserve commonly known with those older Bikes.

I still see after spending upwards of R200 K on a new LC GS, and BMW still haven't solved a simple fuel sender issue by the sounds of it.. Amazing.

Cheers

Alan
