Hi all,
First time BMW GS owner here. Been dreaming of owning a bike again for many years now! And the 650 I thought was a great choice for a novice.
Bike:
F650GS Dakar
2005
55 000km
Relative good condition, needs some TLC but Im looking forward to tinker with it.
Been putting some miles on the bike everyday for the past two weeks. Already feeling much more comfortable on it.
Last bike I owned was 12 years ago and was a 125cc Suzuki!
Welcome Mario
The Dakar is a great bike and you will enjoy lots of adventures on it.
When I got my 650 Funduro, I was looking for some training to help me get the best out of my bike and to improve my handling of such a "big" bike (compared to my Vespa). I ended up doing the Country Trax Intro to Offroad. Although I didn't ride offroad at the time, the course changed my life:
Enjoy.
Lovely bike. You'll get plenty more km out of it. I've seen a Dakar with 280,000 km on the clock. It's a good "starter" bike, but it's also a good "keeper" bike. When you hit more technical gravel, you'll have more fun. If you are happy to stick to the speed limit on the long tar hauls and don't have a pillion to worry about, this will be the only bike you need. I have an F650GS and I love my bike to bits (literally and figuratively). It may not be the perfect bike for everything, but it's mine and it's taken me to amazing places, and that makes it perfect!
FYI: If you're in the Southern Suburbs, I'd highly recommend Andrew from Kingtek as your mechanic (Lily Rd, Retreat). Very, very knowledgeable, non-dealership prices and good customer support. If in the North, I think people use Jeandre Koekemoer.

Thank you!
Yes I am definitely looking at doing a few training sessions just to get a better feel for the bike and expand my riding knowledge.
Thanks for the warm welcome.

Thanks Zanie,
Yes I must say, Im very impressed so far with the bike and I am truly enjoying it! Took it out this morning to Eden on the Bay, with my GF on pillion and it was very enjoyable! Slow and steady cruise and was a great escape. The GF also loved it, so I think she is hooked and we will have many trips soon. She has already mentioned a 10 day trip we should take in June! Hahahaha
Im in Durbanville, so will definitely contact Jeandre. I want him to give the bike a good once over so we can be sure all is tip top shape.
Thank you for the warm welcome!
Well! Never ever going to Flyingbrick again! I will be broke everytime I walk in there! Hahaha
All I can say is wow, so many many awesome equipment and stock there. I felt like a kid in a candy store and really had to contain myself and not spend all my hard earned money!
Service and assistance from the young lad assisting me was great (soz didnt get his name, was the shortest one of the lot).
Purchased:
Dessert Fox helmet
Adjustable Mirrors
Amber headlamp cover
Gloves
