feels like timing is out ?

Hi Guys, i ride a 2001 1100r and had some trouble with my timing sensors and  cables after my son washed the bike for me. i changed the sensors and cables, was very careful to put everything back correctly.

Bike started great, went round the block, it ran really well so i was stoked, closed my toolbox and put my feet up.

over next few weeks I drove to shop and back a few times [3 or 4 k's max each time], then a long break of 8 weeks as i was busy with work.  few weeks ago i drove from Plumstead to Kommetjie and just nearing destination i noticed the timing beginning to feel "a bit off"...rode on a bit, seemed ok. then on my way back [with my son on the back], timing began to feel "rough", she had no oomph, she idles ok but on pull away its like the timing is really way out from low to mid throttle??, or like a valve is open ...higher throttles seem better but motor feels "starved or "strangled" at 120...like it can rev but not go faster.

must my firmware be updated or something similar? i mean does the pc sense a change in electrics and is now trying to compensate for something somehow? is it maybe  my O2 sensor has become disconnected? ...bike rides but is just riding kak...and i cant find any cause.

Does anybody have any idea what is going on please? i'd be ever so grateful as i am really scratching my head here.

regards

Marc

Hi Marc

I once had similar symptoms.  It was the spark plug cover on one side.  It would arc to the cylinder head inside the tappet cover where the wire connects to the plug.  I found it by getting off the bike and listening very carefully near the cylinder head.  Eventually, in the garage out of direct light I managed to see sparks in there.

The boxer motor does timing via a hall-effect sensor.  There is not much to adjust or bugger up there, other than getting water in the wires (in which case the bike will not run at all for a few days until it dries out).

The other problem I have had when taking the tank off that leads to irregular running (but then it is all the time, not after a long ride) is if the throttle cable on one side is not seated properly by the throttle-body.

Good luck.
