F650GS Dakar rear brakes binding

Hi All,

Recently bought my Dakar, and am experiencing rear brake binding. I have replaced the seals in the caliper and the brake fluid, but the problem persists. What i have noticed is that my rear brake pedal stopper has been bent away, so the pedal now comes up a lot higher. I have since bent it back into position, lowering the pedal height a bit. Still the problem persists.

Do i overhaul the master cylinder?

It's more likely to be something in the caliper.  Unless there isn't enough slack in the master.  It is imperative that there is about 2mm of play (slack) in the master cylinder actuator when the brake is not being applied.  This probably translates to about 1cm of play in the brake pedal.

The reason I say "imperative" is that the brake fluid can only return to the reservoir when the master is completely inactive.  That said, perhaps there is some dirt in the return hole to the reservoir.  Prick the holes clear with a pin.

The problem is in the master cylinder,it gets dirt in the teflon part of the sleeve. Usually you battle to bleed the brakes after you drain the system

Thanks guys, it was as you said Alf, dirt between the teflon sleeve and the piston. Striped, cleaned, refitted, bleed the brakes, working 100%!
