'F-S' (Footpeg-Seat) measurement

I come from a bicyling background, where I learnt the many different measurements to make a bicycle 'fit' really well, of which there a 7 major ones. My question: I can find the published stand-over height of most BMW GS bikes, but not the seat-to-footpeg height. I ride a Dakar, and wish to know which bikes - with a STANDARD seat set-up, (1150GS?) would offer increased footpeg-to-seat height/a decrease in leg bend, without going to footpeg-lowering solutions? If this measurement has a name, I'd like to learn what it is, and, if not, I'd like to suggest the 'F-S' (Footpeg-Seat) measurement. This could either be a piece of string, tied to a footpeg, up over seat, and onto other footpeg, OR Footpag to center of seat measurement? Appreciate the input. I'm six"one, and feeling a little cramped on long journeys. Cheers!

Hi Chris I'm 6'4" and ride a 2008 1200GS - standard saddle has two settings, mine is set to high. Footpeg - Footpeg = 123cm (across narrow part of saddle). Footpeg - Saddle = 53cm (vertical dist from peg to line perpendicular with top of saddle). Tony We should learn from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.

Tony, seems the Dakar is close: Footpeg - Footpeg = 125cm (across narrow part of saddle) - may equate to Dakar being 1cm higher than 1200GS. Footpeg - Saddle = ??cm (vertical dist from peg to line perpendicular with top of saddle) - can you clarify further the 'perpendicular' measurement? I feel the Footpeg-Footpeg (F2F) measurement is the easier one to measure, but if a bike is WIDER, then it will affect the height... Just f.y.i., I measured from INSIDE of footpeg. http://www.themanorcottage.co.za

Hi there, I also felt "cramped" on my Dakar (Now on a 1200GS) In my opinion the distance from footpeg to seat is not more on the 1200GS with the seat set at high position. What makes a differnce though is the seat the handlebar distance. Play around with it and try handlebar raizer. The GS I felt the most comfortable on is...1150GSA (I am also quite tall) Regards

Chris, I seem to remember reading that one of the aftermarket suppliers (Touratech, etc) make a 'lowered footpeg' for the 1200's. Perhaps something similar is available for the Dakar. Dale

Jaco - I too have heard that the 1150 GS is a very comfortable bike, and yes, I will be fitting handlebar risers to my Dakar for standing comfort. I may also 'rotate' the handlebars forward/aft to increase comfort, but will now try out an 1150 to check if the sitting position is much different. Can someone measure an F800GS for me and an 1150GS (Footpeg over to footpeg) for interest, to see if it differs from the Dakar and 1200 measurement? Dakar F2F = 125 cm 1200GS F2F = 123 cm 1150GS F2F = ???? F800GS F2F = ???? Thanks! http://www.themanorcottage.co.za

Chris - I was referring to a 1150 GSAdventure, not sure about the 1150 GS. On the 1200, the extra lenght from seat to handlebar makes a huge difference. Look at lifting your Dakar's handlebars, but also swivel it forward. I am sure it will make a huge difference - if you are quite tall, you might need to adjust the screen as well (try fitting a spacer to move it to the front.)

Chris I've re-measured from inside of footpeg to top of saddle (straight line) - still 53cm. I agree with comments re: handlebar position/height. This can have a large impact on achieving a comfortable riding position and handling. I can remember spending a lot of time weighing up different stem/rise combinations on my Cannondale during 10 years of cycling. The pedal to seat height distance was a lot easier to get "right".
