Hi all

Anyone been to "Die Hel" recently?

I've heard from a PE resident (friend) who rides in the vicinity quite a bit, that "the road is quite rough and not for beginners".

Is this true, anyone else been through there recently with a different opinion?

Thank you

I would also be interested to know, as I am planning to go in the next 2 weeks.

The Swartberg Pass was great riding last week.

Hi Hans

We will have all levels of riders in our group, hence the question blush

A beginner can do it, as long as he/she takes it easy. Any terrain can be made more challenging if you add speed. If anyone feels nervous about the water crossings, someone could ride their bike through. There's one rough patch of big cobbles, which may be difficult for a beginner (it looks rather intimidating).

I managed Die Hel when I had less than 10,000 km of riding experience (including tar). The only reason I ended up damaging myself was due to riding outside of my limits. I should have kept to a crawl around the corners! The others in the group should remember to be patient and perhaps also scrub off speed. Even if you say "Don't worry about going slow - we'll wait for you", there's always that pressure to try to keep up.

I did it two months ago.  I'd say it's not for beginners, but anyone who has done Level 1 training should handle it with ease.

As Zanie said, manage your speed on the straights and you won't have a problem.  The last short stretch down into the valley are tight but much easier than the cones you do on Level 1.

River crossings aren't a problem because the surface under the water is pretty smooth - you'd need to be unlucky to fall.

Much easier on a bike than in a car with a trailer!!!

If you can dream it you can do it!

Thanks for the valuable info and comments. I have been watching some of the bike rides into "Die Hel" on you tube and the average speed that I've seen on the speedos in the videos seems to range between 15km/hr - 20km/hr
