Hey Guys,
I don't want to start a thread to compare pro's and con's of different
oils, but driving a 2009 800GS i have noticed a 'death rattle' at start-up and
the gearbox changes are a bit clunky after a short 60km/h drive.
Has oil got any relation to these? Manual suggests using 15W40,
I don't know a lot about oil, but is that not a bit "dun" for
dry-sumps and gearbox lub? I have read about the new Power1 10W50, any
thoughts? Also heard from the 'bos-telefoon' that the 2013 spec has changed to
20W50?
Now you are going to open a can of worms. .
Check this link to understand how oil works first: http://hyperformancecycles.net/oil_bible.pdf
There is a section on Motorcycle vs car oils.
My experience is that the Motorcycle manufacturers oil is prescribed for generally colder conditions than we have, so I use 20w50. Normal GTX.
Andrew King of Kingtek Motorcycles researches the appropriate oil for my bike and riding style. I forget the spec but it is something like 10w60. Being synthetic means that it works more evenly across a wide range of temperatures (easy running when cold, and still gives protection when hot).
My 10c is as follows
STICK TO THE BOOK
SAE 15W-50, API SJ/ JASO MA2
My 2010 F800GS does the same thing, Should i be worried?
Don't stress about it. It's not uncommon on the 800GS, supposedly if the bike has stood for a few weeks, usually. Has something to do with oil draining away from the cylinder head area (?) during standing.
It has done it less since I switched to Castrol Power-1.
Shane at Donford CT or Donald Walklett at MotoWorx can give you a good technical explanation.
Ok, thanks!
By the way, you're not related to Sam Bowker and his Dad?
Most Probably am somewhere along the way. I've never heard of him before but there is a Bowker family reunion happening in May so maybe he will turn up there.
Maybe not related, but a Nissan XTrail ALSO has a noisy timing chain on start up, say 3-5 seconds...
It takes this long (3-5 seconds) for the oil pressure to build, to then quiten the timing chain tensioner(s), in this time the timing chain, which runs vertically, is noisy whilst it 'picks up' the oil that then quitens the timing chain, and the tensioners to come in to play - sounds a bit like mar les in a paint can, WELL-known XTrail peculiarity, with NO negative effects, and as said, it is quickly quited....
My VERY laymans understanding, may have no bearing, but there are similarities!
