Good day everyone,

Recently purchased an second hand Dakar and would like to fit the guy with some crash bars, when I got my 1200 the first thing I did was phone Mike from Rockfox, but they do not stock any products for the Dakar...

I see there is some off the shelve options like the SW-Motech and Touratech bars, they seem to be more for protecting the motor... If you drop the Dakar the most damage will come from the body in front and the exhaust at the back, I would like something that protects those sections also...

I found these guys on Gumtree called 'Waltec Engineering' situated in Mosselbaai, they make a Adventure and Sport version for the Dakar, anyone have any experience with them:

Adventure:

Sport:

Any user reviews or first hand experience with Dakar crash bars would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi Stoukie

I bought the sport version for my son's Dakar (did not know there was an adventure version). They have proven to be good so far. Quality is good and dealing with Waltec was no problem. They arranged courier door to door delivery.

Thank you Mervyn, the Adventure option seems to be new, but a bit overkill for my needs, will be going for the Sport option also. Thank you for the feedback.

The SW-Motech crash bars I have on my 2001 650GS are actually meant for a 650 Sertao. I'm not sure if they'll fit the Dakar? Anyway, they've done the job well enough with my bike. I've fallen plenty of times and hard enough to break a bone and snap a crash bar. I've welded the bars twice now. You'd rather keep fixing the crash bars than replace the very expensive bit of gadget that it is protecting (the R5000 radiator - and I know the cost, I've had to replace one before, but not due to crash damage). Also: it is better that the crash bars snap rather than the motorbike frame to which it is mounted, i.e. you'd want to sacrifice the bars, rather than the bike. I've never needed anything to protect the exhaust. The damage seems to occur up-front as a rule.

The scuffs after my worst fall. I lost indicators and a front brake lever as well.

2.5 years, 40,000 km, some falls, many side-stand incidents, and two weld-fixes later:

They're also a great place for spotlight mounts; the single-largest factor behind increased visibility on the road (from my experience).

Morning Stoukie. I bought the adventure crash bars from Hennie at Walter. I have just come back from a 9 day ride to Namibia and am very happy with them.

Thank you for the feedback Zanie and Craig. I ended up buying the 'Sport' version of the Dakar crash bars from Hennie at Waltec, should be in the port tomorrow and at my door on Thursday or Friday.

Craig, would like to see a picture of the fitted bars if you have one close by, just for interest sake...

Zanie those SW-Motech bars look very impressive, haven't seem them fitted on the bike. Hopefully my wife will enjoy the same protection from the Waltech bars as you have from the SW-Motech ones.

Hi Stoukie

Also fitted the Waltec sport a while back, good service and price, easy fitment.

Only probs I've had thus far - the one welding point has cracked right through, probably from thumper vibration.  The powdercoating not that great - will have to sandblast and re-coat mine sooner than later (+-18months of use).

All considered, for the price vs other options still hard to ignore, and local is LEKKER!!

Enjoy them!

Cheers

Jean
