Hi guys I am going to be starting to take my wife with me on my R1100S and have this fear of her falling off the back of the bike. I see that Corbin manufactures aftermarket seats for the R1100S and has a removable backrest for the pillion. http://www.corbin.com/bmw/r1100s.shtml Its a pricey option and was wondering if anyone knows of a local solution to my problem. Also I havent really had too much experience with a pillion and Im not sure if I trust my wife to not suddenly fall off the back :P I've read a lot about riding with a pillion but any advice from the forum members would be appreciated (especially around the posibility of someone falling off the back of the bike) Cheers

Nice big block of velcro on the seat will do the trick. RIDE,RACE,PLAY! I RIDE THEREFORE I AM!

You just made me burst out laughing in the middle of the office. Ill get her some safety jeans made and Ill ask Leather Forever to line the back with heavy duty velcro. I'll use it as a last resort, but I'll use it if I have to ;)

If you have a serious concern, my old man actually used to strap me to his back when I was knee high to a grass hopper (I'm now 6ft tall) with an old seat belt. Maybe opposing velcro pads on your back / her front. Else - tell her to hold on and relax - seems to work in most cases and unless you deserve "Hooligan of the month" awards, you shouldn't have a problem.

Falling off the back is a common fear, but not a reality. (FEAR = Fictitious Events Appearing Real). Why not just mount a top-box. That way you have somewhere to put your stuff when commuting, and it has enormous psychological value. Also, lets nag for a club rider-pillion course again. (For GS on the grass at Nelson's Creek - absolutely brilliant training and fun). Website Administrator [http://honeybadger.net Honey Badger IT Services]

Well Im a pretty conservative rider so she wont be falling off due to wheelies:D Im actually thinking of getting those neon harness things to go around me that she can hang onto. Also, do you think that the fact that my wife does not know how to ride a bicycle could pose a problem?

Ability to ride is not a pre-requisite to riding pillion. It might even be a bonus, because she won't interfere. The rule for pillion (especially when standing up, but also for sitting), is to stay glued to the rider's back. That is, do whatever the rider does... TOPBOX is the answer. A Givi will put you back about R1400, or even less if you take a smaller one. My wife will not pillion without it. Find a quiet spot to pillion her for the first time. The sensation of leaning into a corner can be intimidating at first. The main idea is to build her confidence.

I like Charles idea of the topbox as I also had some reservations about losing my pillion, which were culled by this neat, functional little addition. I find personally - that a relaxed pillion that does NOTHING but go with the flow whilst seated on road is best (off-road & standing - different kettle of fish entirely) The advantage of the dayglo vests is that you will increase visibility - only a bad idea in guerilla warfare :) :P

Truth of the matter is that the standard seat on the R1100S is quite slippery. Contact Dinesh Chetty on 082 873 2707 and ask him to recover the seat with a grippier material. RIDE,RACE,PLAY! I RIDE THEREFORE I AM!

Charles and Shaded it is a R1100S....a road bike. Recall your wife will quickly train YOU,if you are accelerating too harshly and braking badly,(ribs and helmet areas will become your road ears) shortly you will be a much smoother rider or a solo rider or she will have her own bike, either way the problem will solve itself.:-)

Thanks for all the good feedback. Id only be interested in getting a top box if it was easily removable and didnt make the bike look crappy. I dont really need additional storage as my bike came with a full luggage. What is a good topbox option for the R1100S? Freak, perhaps I can come down to the store this weekend and you can show me a few suitable solutions? I think I might contact that guy to recover the seat if it will make a difference but I do think that my seat might already have been recovered by the previous owner. And I will get the dayglo strap vest. Looks like Ill be implementing all of your advice :P

My first consideration with a topbox is that it must be able to store two helmets. It is nice to go to the shops with your bike - BUT I dont want to carry my helmet around for the whole time. All my other requirements are met by this first. My 650 had a "single helmet" size topbox - so the wife still had to lugg her helmet around. When I had to buy a topbox for the next bike she quickly asked for "two helmet" box. If this is not a primary concern, then you can even go for a small topbox. All these topboxes have a base that gets mounted onto the bike. the box just clips onto this base and can be removed very easily.

Road Bikes can have topbox's too Mr Terry. I know what and R1100S looks like. I'm glad we could help in some way or another Rekall. If you're worried about your missus coming off the back - try taking a few trips around in a parking lot - calm both your nerves (after hours) - then move onto the road.

Haha those Love Handles look really ridiculous. I think the Dayglo strap vest should performa similar function. Stofpad, I look to receiving those pillion tips from you. I've been married for a short time and Im still quite fond of my wife so thanks for all the help and tips on helping me keep her from falling off the bike. I think I will also swing my Constantiaberg Biketique and check out a few topboxes as well.

Kappamoto does have a bracket to fit a topbox on the R1100S cost would be around R1200.00. You can fit any box in the range onto the bracket. RIDE,RACE,PLAY! I RIDE THEREFORE I AM!

Much appreciated! I've seen a few brackets on the internet and most of them aren't great to look at. I don’t suppose you have any photos of the R1100S bracket? I can't seem to find one on the net. I don’t want you wasting your time sourcing a part unnecessarily. Thanks again

Only advice I can offer is not to use ANY Mr Min to clean the seat.... I was a pillion on a ZX14, and it is not fun when that stuff was used on the seat! PS I will buy you a beer if you can correctly guess the speed we were traveling. I have yet to try a kango pouch for my new pillion! new pillionnew pillion
