An American friend of mine who lives permanently in Burundi is planning to buy a new 1200GS here in South Africa and then to ride it back to Burundi where the bike will be registered. Could anyone perhaps offer advice on the technicalities of such a transaction, for example:

How must the bike be registered to take it across borders? Would temporary South African permits be good enough, or would he need more substantial registration paperwork?

Would he be able to claim back the VAT and other taxes on the bike?

Any other information that would assist to make such a transaction work?

The motorcycle will need to be registered in South Africa at a SA address and the VAT paid. He will then claim the VAT back at the border gate when he leaves SA.

The motorcycle must be registered otherwize it is deemed and export which will need to be done via BMW Motorrad in Johannesburg.

All the best.
