In the course of 2008 Mark Bristow, CEO of Randgold, decided to realise a long held dream; to ride motorbikes unassisted, from Cape Town, South Africa to Cairo, Egypt with his boys. This arduous journey would take approximately 48 days and it called for the camaraderie of old mates, biker dads and fellow adventurers; Les Johnson, Rob Alexander and Paul Harbidge to complete the posse and add the edge. Thus was born BOYZ ON BIKES--CAPE TO CAIRO 2009. This morning they leave Umhlanga for Mozambique with a pensiive apprehension of what lays ahead. Each bike is fitted with a Starcom1 Advance unit which links to GPS, Phone and Mp3. Each bike also sports an HYT VHF radio to keep the riders in touch with each other. Fitting Starcom Systems As installation was hastily done on the last weekend, I flew to Durban yesterday and spent the day creating junction boxes, testing and optimising their systems.
