Boxer Toolkit

A while ago Donford was selling Backbone toolkits for R600 (apparently on a special) - now these kits are going at R 1 111 ! :( Has anybody looked at buying these tools separately? Other than the special tool to remove the front tire, all the tools are standard tools. Any idea what these tools would cost if you bought it separately? Ay "tool dealers" in the club that wants to look at putting something like this together? I should have raided the 1100 RT's toolkit before I sold it. ;)

Padlangs, I went to Makro and bought everything I need, tyre levers the works for about R600.00, all their housebrand Metrench (spelling may be off), very good stuff. I then bought some add ons I probably didn't need which brought the bill to about R800.00. I now have a very nice complete set of tools for every single bolt or tork on the bike.

After all is said and done, the packaging the Bascbones kit comes in and the focus on the GS makes it very good value for money. You won't go wrong buying a bacbones kit. Andyman Yup that's me. Standing up in the traffic on the 1150GSA.

Aha - I thought R1111 sounded a bit steep. The Backbones kit uses AmiPro, which is probably very similar to Metrench. Any chance somebody (please Neil) would take the time to supply a list of all the parts in the Backbones kit? Just so one knows where to start shopping. PS Does anybody know where one can get the "socket" for the new oil filter on the boxer engines?

Chris, Ampro is an Autozone/Midas housebrand with a lifetime warranty. I use their tools on a daily basis, and the quality is good. Autozone Hyper is one of my suppliers and I spend quite a lot with them on a monthly basis, so I get very good discounts from them. If somebody can perhaps make up a list of the tools required then I will gladly assist by getting a quote from them and then we can compare.

Vernon the set is 3/8 drive (power bar and all sockets). I am not sure on the size of the Plug spanner. Small and long does not reallr help. ;) Vernon would you please find out what type of price your friend would charge for this. THANKS The one item that Christo did not mention was the tire levers. This is probably more for the GS riders - touch wood.

Once we have decided on a standard set of tools, I would be a taker. I like the Idea of the 3/4" tools as they are compact and can take take almost the entire range of bits and sockets required for the bikes. I have researched some on the toolkits and think that all the torx and allen bits required come in either a 6 or 10mm hex. I would cary a 10mm socket to take the bits instead of the sets of torx and allen keys. There are also a few bolts on the bike I would change as they are singles such as the cotter bolt on the gear shift for the 1200GS. Also, the 'special' tool for front wheel removal I made by welding a nut to a spare 3/4" socket I had. Works like a dream. Gents in my experience the cheapest way would be to simply but the Bacbones kit. I did't as I had most/all when they came out, but the time taken and petrol to ride around.....buy it and save.

Vernon the site that Mike posted lists ALL the tools in the backbones kit: http://www.bhi.co.za/bacbones.htm?sm[p1][category]=209&sm[p1][persistent]=1&&PHPSESSID=ff804733cd48193aa2d8885f7a1e110c I think your contact should be able to provide all of these tools off the shelf, except the one to remove the front wheel. I like Mike's idea of just making up a socket-bolt tool for this purpose. Also it says that the plug spanner is "adapted" for the boxer motor. (?) Probably just turned down a fraction so it can fit. (?) Looking forward to "your" price Vernon - just beware, if the price is right you will have some business coming your way.

Hi Chris, I bought my cup spanner for the oil filter from Autozone in 33 Strand Street, Bellville. I don't know if it is the same as the one for your new bike. The code for the the spanner is FED.T70402 and it cost R26.27!! It is a perfect fit for the oil filter. www.wode.co.za

Wolf does it have flat sections around the edge? I do have one of those, works a charm when servicing the car as well. :) The new 1200 boxers need almost an oversize female spline/torxs type socket.

What I did, I took a new oil filter to the shop and tried it there. I am still searching for a good alternative oil filter from a reputable manufacturer. I find the R100,- charged by BMW for the original one totally ridiculous. www.wode.co.za

I hear you and AGREE with you. Maybe we should not let BMW find out about the R360 ex VAT air filter for a Daihatsu !!!
