BMW Dakar Spotlights

Yet again it seems that I don't know everything...

I'm looking for the best spot to mount a set of spotlights/foglights on my BMW F650 GS Dakar ? And also a decent set of lights ?

My dad has the 2011 BMW G650 GS and he has this idea of mounting them on the fork so that you have extra light as you go into a turn. He just struggles to get a suitable mounting so he designed one that mounts between the forks on the bottom fender with to "ears" that stick out beside the fork but the metal he used is to thin so the spots keep on rattling as he rides especially on uneven road.

My quetions is:

  1. Is it a good idea to mount them on the fork for more light as you turn ? If yes, is there a suitable mount for that or must I look into my dad's idea ?
  2. Or what is the most suitable place for spotlights ?

Where are you located? I have a 2002 Dakar, like your one (only sexier, lol). I have the Waltec full crash bars fitted and spots fitted to the bars.

I am willing to meet up with you so that you can have a look at my set up, if you want. Let me know

Hentian,

I fully agree with Graig.  I also went with the Waltec lower crash bars (R1,575 incl. delivery) and spotlights & brackets from Extreme lights (R1,680 incl. delivery) on my 2004 Dakar.  Still very happy with both products after about 18 months.

Thank you very much.

@ Craig: I'm from the West Coast (Vredenburg). That would maybe help me if we may cross paths sometime.

@ Gerhard: That looks much nicer than spots flapping around on the fork. I also found these spots on Max Inc but I'm not sure which is better ? http://www.max-inc.co.za/hawk-eye-projector-spot-light-kit/

Also Gerhard: That crash bar that you have fitted, does it effect your riding position ? Because I see the point where it fits on the frame is right where your knee is ?

Those spots look like they will be able to do the job, and at R750 it seems a very good deal.  The only major difference between those and mine is that they are 55W vs the 10W ones I have on.  They will therefore just drain your battery faster if you forget them on wink.

The bars didn't affect my riding position at all.  Neither my knee or shin is hitting any of the bolts or bars (I'm about 1.86m tall).

I first bought a set of inferior spotlights online. I quickly went to Flying Brick and paid +/- R1500 for a decent set. I have been to Namibia and done a few trips around the Cape Province and am very happy with the set I now have fitted.

The forks are not a good idea:

  1. You have issues with motion/turning and the wiring, which will eventually break, and
  2. When you turn, your fork actually turns the other way (not into the turn), so you will have less light around the corner.  This is called "countersteering".
