I recently put a BMC air filter in my 650 mainly because I got sick of replacing the standard air filter due to all the sand that collects in the filter and the the oil that splash onto the bottom of the standard paper filter. Now you can imagine what happens when paper, oil and sand mix :-) After I fitted the BMC filter I immediately felt the difference in my bike. (okay it's maybe a bit psychological ;-) ) However my bike certainly feels better when accelerating hard and idling sounds smooth. The BMC filter is very expensive but worth it if you ride your bike hard and do a lot of off road. Ps. Oil gets into the airbox if the bike is on its side ;-) Or when over filled. Corné

Agree about the filter. I have a BMC filter and can feel the difference when I clean it. When I took the bike in for its 100 000 km service, Atlantic also cleaned the filter because they have a cleaning kit there.

The engine design is such that any oil overflow, blowback or even fuel overflow, goes into the airbox to be burned in the engine rather than emitted as pollution. I think an oily airbox is a good thing, because it helps trap any dust that does get through the filter. Obviously, excessive oil in the airbox is a bad sign and remedial action must be taken. I've used rubbergrease on the rim of the filter to seal it in. Prevents dust from seeping thought on the side. You can buy the cleaning kit (it's just a soap and an oil). K&N Air Filter cleaner... Regards, Corné

Well, none that you can see :) Rather than soil the autobahn with oil, spew it into the air and have the wind blow it into Poland ;-) Website Administrator [http://honeybadger.net Honey Badger IT Services]
