The emphasis of this outing is for beginners. I have again had requests to arrange another Off Road beginners ride aimed at riders who have recently bought their new GS but have no or very little experience of riding on dirt roads. The ride would not suite semi or experienced riders. The plan would be to arrange a Sunday morning ride and to have lunch along the way. The ride will be preceded by a short talk on, different tyres, tyre pressure, pressure guages, riding gear, abs brakes, tyre pumps, and other info in laymans terms. If you are interested place your name on the posting or send me an e mail to geoffrussell@absamail.co.za and depending on response I will confirm dates and arrange the outing. Morning all, Date for the beginners ride is Sunday 25th November at 0800. This is unfortunately the only Sunday I have available until next year. We will meet at the Florida Farm Stall near Wellington on the corner of the R44 (Adam Tas Street) and the R45 (Malmsbury rd). We will have a short chat about some do's and don'ts before we leave on a dirt ride to Gouda, then to Moorreesburg then to Malmsbury and back to Florida Farm stall. We will stop from time to time to chat and ask and answer questions. Your partners are welcome to join us. The ride will be about 4 hours. Please confirm that you are able to attend on this date or not. I have asked Andy and Anne Connell to come along on the ride if they are available. Anne has just started riding and attended the first beginners ride and since then she has improved in leaps and bounds. Her Husband Andy is newish to Off Road Riding but is a great rider, mechanic and Medic. Tanya van Niekerk who was also on our first beginners ride is returning to continue her learning process. A huge pity there are so few ladies joining us. Look forward to your responses. Regards, Geoff.

Mmmm, now I'm torn. Would like to do this, but would also like to attend the Toy Run. How far is the Farm Stall from CT? And how do I get there?
There are so many problems in this world. Luckily there's a wristband available for almost all of them.

Cloudgazer, The TOY RUN is an awesome event make no mistake, it's all about getting toys to the kids. You can arrange (we'll help) that your toy does get to the kids. the ONLY reason why I suggest you do the beginners off road training is because you said you want to experience the outdoors and gravel....you are not going to get this on the Toy Run. I arranged that my toy gets to the bin on the toy run and that I can go on the off road trip. Just a suggestion.... The trip starts in Wellington and Wellington is about 60km's from town. I also suggest that you maybe speak directly to Geoff Russel - he organises and leads these off road trips. Russel@aroma.co.za Keep it SAFE !!

Cloudgazer I have been offroad all my life I haven't yet done a trip with GR but I have done many toy runs There is no question you will enjoy the offroad trip with GR 10 times the toy run and learn so much more.

Cloudgazer, I have been on a couple of the off road trips with Geoff and I have to admit that it does wonders for the confidence - we dicussed everything and he is very open for advise - things like "am I stitting right" to " is this tyre pressure correct" nothing is left out and everything gets answered. If you want to really enjoy your bike, get some training, going into heaps of other bikers whilst not 100% comfortable on your bike MIGHT not be the right thing to do. I was also split btween the toy run and the training and I decided to do the training (again)....I also feel at ease knowing that BMW is well represented at the TOY RUN and that my toy will make it to a needy child. Keep it SAFE !!

Padlangs (not verified)
If you are not 110 % comfortable on your bike -STAY AWAY from the toy run. When you get 7 000 + bikes together there will always be some "unruly" characters, even the odd idiot that tries to pull a wheelie inside a pack of people riding in formation. Riding in such a big group is not for the faint harted. Go and enjoy the off-road training. ALWAYS safety first - and training is an important step towards safe riding.

Cloudgazer, I have send Geoff an e-mail now to find out if he can accommodate me on the ride. If he can we can meet at the Winelands 1stop and ride together to Wellington. The Toy run can never be as much fun as getting dirty with your Dakar. IMO. I believe I can fly!

Geoff wanneer is die volgende "beginners off road riding" na hierdie een? Dalk kan ek dit dan maak as ek bietjie langer voor die tyd die datums kry en probeer beplan?

Hi Geoff Thanks very much for a really enjoyable outing, I learned a lot as I am sure most of us did.... even though I was terrified half the time, I suppose confidence only comes with practice and experience. Thanks also to Leon for giving up his Sunday morning to toddle along behind us with his tool kit and to make sure we were all ok. Thanks Geoff It was awesome, especially to discover the real purpose of a GS. I had some shaky moments (tankslapper) but I am sure for the bike it was no big deal, thank you bike! I'm also glad to hear that Mandy is OK, I wish her a speedy recovery. Dirk

Nice - slip in a little hint that there might have been some incident, but don't tell us anything about it... ;-) What happened?

Unfortunately Mandy Crosswell took a tumble on the dirt road just outside Gouda after she had hit some holes in the dirt road on a right hander. She says she was doing about 70kph. Her riding clothes helped tremendously however she still ended up with a broken left ankle, cut right elbow and a very eina shoulder. See this exert from her husband Steve's e mail to me : I’d like to thank everyone for their help today after Mandy went farming, and I thought I’d bring you up to date. I got her into Durbanville Mediclinic where they stitched her elbow and diagnosed a broken left ankle. Her right shoulder is sore and she has assorted bruises but is otherwise cheerful, well, sort of cheerful. Mandy’s jacket, a Lookwell, protected her very well. The jacket is a write-off, but her back and shoulders are intact. She was wearing Lookwell gloves and her palms and knuckles are OK. When I looked at the abrasion on the palms of her gloves I thought that she would have lost all of the skin on her palms if she hadn’t been wearing any. She was wearing BMW City pants, amazing, hardly pulled a thread. Boots, Daytona – not enough ankle protection for the low boots............................ I am sure that you all join me in wishing Mandy a speedy recovery. Geoff.

Great day Geoff = thanks a million. We wanted to do the Toy Run at first, but eventually decided to go on the GS beginners run. Good choice as we have learnt so much. To stand riding two-up (at speed) was quite a scare at first, but thanks again for your fantastic advice. Sandra now just wants to go riding... We all had a great day. All of the best to Mandy; good to hear that she is OK. Once agian thanks to Geoff, Leon and all who rode together to make this a memorable day. First of many to come; next time we might be brave enough to go on a tour with you guys.

The route looks great, never knew those back roads were there and I'm going to follow your tracks shortly for a nic e day ride. Andyman Yup that's me. Standing up in the traffic on the 1150GSA.

I'm very jealous. Wanted to join you guys, but was committed to doing the Toy run. Unfortunately I didn't get to do that either. I bought my bike last Monday, and was planning to do a lot of riding on the weekend. But while at some friends on Sat morning - some asshole stuck a screwdriver into my ignition and twisted it. I had to get BMW to come and two the bike away. Who knows when I'll be getting it back... Faaaaarck, the urthest I've been is to Camps Bay, and maybe done a total of 100kms. I am not a happy camper.
