Hi
I have a trip in mind and wondered if you could give me some input on conditions, what to look out for etc.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Howzit,
I see you are going to Montagu via the N1 on your map. Why not rather ride towards Laingsburg and then come through Anysberg reserve to Montagu?

Thanks for this info. I had a look at the roads on google and just wondered if these would be suitable for pillion ?
If it is, I would love to do it.
Thanks for the info, appreciate.
I think roarman meant this: https://goo.gl/Ypgfyq
If yes, it's not very pillion friendly; it can be very rocky and there are sand patches. If not, the route just below Anysberg is pillion-friendly if memory serves me correctly (rode it in Dec last year).
A beautiful easy alternative to the N1 would also be the Witteberge Road: https://goo.gl/7eww4y
Between Sutherland and Ladismith I'd suggest this route through the Moordenaarskaroo: https://goo.gl/5P84Wu
Some photos of the area can be found in this ride report, which covered similar routes: http://bmwmotorradclubcape.co.za/facing-fear-and-finding-friends
Hi
Awesome - thanks a lot. Have had a look at the suggestions and will do just that.
Shot for the info about pillion etc.
Cheers
Just read your trip report - awesome write up. I will study it more :) thanks
Thanks Zanie. Exactly what I meant. There are a number of rocks and small sand patches through Anysberg. So depending on skill, it may not be pillion friendly.
I've always wanted to do that Witteberge Road but I'm never in that area with my bike. I try and avoid N1 as much as possible. Only time I'm on the N1 is when I want to get somewhere quickly.
@Lance, I've never ridden on that route south of Anysberg that you mapped after my response so unfortunately I can't give advice on that. Maybe somebody else on the forum can advise but from Google earth it looks ok.... but Google earth can be deceiving.
What ever you decide, we want to see pictures afterwards
Cool man will do
cheers
We did the road skirting along the bottom of Anysberg on 2 Jan. This was our route: https://goo.gl/tX2NcB
It's good gravel highway with some passes thrown in. Like so:
But Witteberg has a special place in my heart:
Though you'll have to watch for the occasional puddle (probably dry now), sometimes there's a small bit of sand at the cattle grids and there is free-roaming livestock (horses, cows, sheep, etc).
Anysberg won't be fun with a pillion unless you're relatively skilled.
It probably won't be wet now. Last time I went through (Dec last year), this crossing was bone dry.
The road in Anysberg varies from "good with some rocky / sandy patches and water crossings thrown in" to "extreme" depending on when you visit and when they did road repairs.
Here's a great ride report by a Wild Dog member, along with his young son sitting pillion, who tackled Anysberg after heavy rain and flooding: http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=142519.0
In that case, the guests were actually stuck. No-one could get in or out of Anysberg in a car, but this guy managed (just) on his bike. His son was airlifted out, along with some of the guests.
Hi Zanie
That must have been an awesome trip !!
I am glad you mentioned the pillion thing. Can't say i enjoy sand...
cheers
