AFTER A LONG TRIP ON DIRT I always check and clean the air box and the air filter. If the dust is so plentifull consider a new filter element. If the dust is so plentifull consider a new filter element. The dust in the matrix indicates your element has been compromisedThe dust in the matrix indicates your element has been compromised I have recently returned form the November BMWCMCC West Coast Tour. This is what my air filter and box look like after a 1200km run through sand and dirt. Be sure to follow the owners book guide and vacuum all air from the airbox and suck out any dust from the filter. If in doubt- replace the filter. Andyman Yup that's me. Andyman, seems like you have to fit a snorkel on your GS.

Hi Andyman,Air filters and their care is a very delicate subject due mainly to the lessons learnt from others. As indicated in the photo you have dust on the matrix, BAD news man, a dust partical larger than 5 micron will act as an abrasive and scour the ring/liner, fact. Seems to sugest that the seals on the filter were not properly seated. If your air filter is dirty (Remember that the dirtier the filter gets the "more" efficient, as in clean air it becomes. Should the vacuum on the induction side be more than 20" water gauge throw it away it has done its job.) and needs replacement DO NOT CLEAN IT, throw it away in the dust bin!! The seals on either side of the filter have been compressed and are no longer usefull plus some other reasons. This is my 2 cents worth, hope you can use it. Bum in the saddle, always.

Think before you ink.

Thanks Cheesy, Filter thrown away. I wanted to show how much dust can get in after a long off-tar ride. The dust on the matrix was vacummed off after the photo and the engine oil changed. Very worrying to see the fine dust on the matrix on the 'inside' of the element chamber. Thanks for the advice. Andyman Yup that's me. Standing up in the traffic on the 1150GSA.
