I stopped at the local supermarket on my way to work this morning.  Coming out of the shop, my ADV just refused to start.  I suspect it is the battery (3 years old), but am worried that it didn’t give me a warning beforehand whatsoever.  Is that ops normal?  I had to recover it back home and had it on the Optimate for the day.  At least the electronics is coming on and the bike is doing its pre-start check if you now switch it on.  It still just “click” if you push the start button.  I assume it is time for a new battery.

Thus, the million dollar question – where is the best place (price-wise) to buy a battery?

Check this thread on the forum.  I spent R330 on a new battery for Mr.Badger.

And yes, batteries do just 'go' without a warning.  What happens is that the plates gradually get more and more out of shape (physically), but work fine electrically.  One day, two of the plates touch.  As soon as they touch they start shorting out the battery and it is kaput.

Thanks for the advice.  I have done a search and have read the mail on batteries.  However, I was worried that everything happened so quick without any warning.  This is putting my mind at ease.

Abel it just happens, just as well you were not between nowhere ans somewhere.

I have just replaced the 2 year old battery on the 1200 with a Yuasa, R834-00 incl Tax. IMO the best battery on the market. Try Trackmak.

Three years, you lucky man !!

Always dies without any warning. Bought a new one for just over 400 Rand, was the third in 3,5 years.

I was actually thinking about such a scenario. I'll be doing a trip on my own through the Ceres-Karoo next weekend.  Think about the possibility of standing between nowhere on your own in 40 degrees with a flat battery! Die son hy issie warm!

this happened to us on the road between Solitaire and Walvis Bay in Namibia. Now that is in the middle of nowhere!!! Happened whilst we were riding and the one GS 1200 simply cut out whilst doing about 100km/ hr in loose dirt. Nearly brought him down. Seemed the battery broke a internal conection due to the vibration. We took out one of the batteries from the other bikes and drove back to Solitaire where in true Namibian networking style, Moose was able to get someone in Windhoek to put a new battery on a light plane that was leaving that pm to collect cash at Solitaire. Yes, they do have a runway!!! 4 hours later we had a new battery. The next day we were able to continue our journey.  : Where there"s a will, there is a way"
