The 3rd biggest altitude gaining pass in SA - Have you ridden it?
We really got lucky filming this big pass, as more often than not it's either raining or misty. With a summit height of 1970m and a 1065m altitude variance over 27,4 km and 117 bends, corners and curves, the Clivia Pass provides magical views in pristine conditions, but be aware of the multiple dangers inherent on this restricted road. In our news release today, we unpack all the do's and don'ts of this pass, as well as explore other passes news including an update on the Ben 10 Eco-Challenge. It would be interesting to know how many BMW Club members have attempted or completed the challenge? So far less than half of those entered have been able to complete it.

I came down from the top and stopped on the other side of the fire, plane dropped its load over the firefighters down there.
I only discovered when I reached the bottom that this was a restricted road that needed a permit - didn't see any signs at the top. Fortunately the security guard at the bottom let me through after a while. Not sure what his alternatives were - I offered to drive back up ;-)
The signage is not very clear when you approach from the summit area and when we filmed it, the guard opened the boom well before we got there and simply waved us through. Perhaps the bakkie I was driving looked official?
I think if Sappi were hell bent on not allowing visitors, they would close the pass off at the top as well. That's how I read things on the day. On the approach road, there's a substantial tarred airstrip, which is obviously where they launch their spotter planes from.
Lots of bikers enjoy this pass and I have heard various tales of issues about being let out at the bottom of the pass, but as you say, the alternative is to ride back out the way you came. It's a bit of a schlep, but a beauitiful ride up or down.
I don't even recall seeing a boom at the top. It was such a lekker day though, I might have "blissed out" 
As a biker, I was quite disappointed that so many areas in Mpumalanga are off limits to us. And not very well marked as such. I was stopped and told-off in the Tzaneen forests too.
