This 2009 event, althougb I have been biking for many a year, was my first, and no matter how many more in the future, one that I will always remember - especially within the context of Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist. On Friday morning at approximately 06:45 at the Wineland's Engen, we, that is Morne, Lawrence and I, were approached by a chap introducing himself as Attie De Waal, a travelling colleague to the Buff. In Rawsonville we called at Chris and Suzette's home joining us en route to Worcester Shell to collect some Ullyses bikers from Worcester. The route, breakfast at the Country Pumpkin via Oudtshoorn and the Robinson Pass to Mossel Bay. Less than an hour later after leaving Worcester Attie died after sustaining serious injuries after losing his bike just beyond the Fort entering Montagu. So, what's this all about? As with Santiago, the Sheppard in The Alchemist, one tends to contemplate when one is witness to such, and the following events at the Buff when travelling the countryside. To Walter,Morne and Chris - thanks for the good ride, sharing and friendship; To Walter for the lead through the Sunday morning mist from Mossel Bay all the way to Swellendam and waiting for me when I had to lessen speed. To Dave and Mario - sharing the humor and laughs on Saturday at "breakfast" at The Heads; To Rene (my friend Piet) for the friendship and kind words of support (Piet will know) and the many other new friends made at the Buff. So, as the Santiago discovered in his journey, let us appreciate what we have, what we share, when we depart and when we arrive back in safety at home. Will I attend another Buff - in all probability yes, BUT, I will most definately not camp on the site, especially because of the many "happenings" taking place when normal tired bikers want to sleep, i.e., midnight burn-outs, doughnuts, valve-slapping, etc - however, it was something that I wanted to personally experience. Been there, seen it all, done it. Theo

You will need to go again to get the T shirt. This time sleep off site as so many of us do. I am also advised that of particular interest to you is the doughnut. Will the 800 be up to it? I love the Buff., the vibe, the people in different stages of existance, the rides there and back, a quick trip to Outshoorn via the wonderfull passes or Knysna for the oysters or even Port Elizabeth to wittness the inaugural run of a friends model steam train that took 3,5 years to build. Yes the Buff is a magic experience. Did you see the Diesel powered bike? Pierre please P M your Cell No. Ignore opinions, heed facts. Feet on the pegs, always.

Rene Yes, I will attend, if all goes well, in 2010. My first Buff T-shirt does have tremendous significance! As far as the doughnuts go - at least I will then accommodate the comment and prove that I do not only use the centre of the tyre - but with the bike being stationary! As far as the Suzuki is concerned - thank you but no after seeing some of the characters riding them - maybe I should switch to a Harley - hitch it on a trailer to a venue and park - just to show I am a biker? My cell # is 083 2319026. Regards Theo

Some info re the diesel bike. It belongs to a member of Ulysses Wesetrn Cape, Adrian Knight. He is the Anglican Parish Priest in Robertson. He is building up another diesel bike, using a V-Twin motor which he purchased from China. Apparently it looks good, sort of Harley/Indian styling. Apparantly he was an engineer before entering the ministry. The Taurus is powered by an old water pump motor. It doesn't go very fast but runs on the smell of a an oil [diesel] rag. :)

I really enjoyed the ride, the bike is a superb piece of machinery. However, this morning as I rode back from the Karoo Saloon I noticed a 'weave' that I hadn't picked up before, even at low speed. It occured in Robertson while doing 60 kph, I thought at first that I had a slow puncture.Again it came back on the N1 while going faster near Canal walk. I suspect the electronic suspension may be at fault. I have it set on Sport with 1 x rider and lugagge and it behaved well on Friday through to Sunday. Anyway it has to go in for a service soon, I'll ask the boffins to check it out. It was nice to get off the bike this morning with no aches and pains! :)

"All around me are a million faces, worn out faces, worn out places..." words immortalised in the song by Tears for Fears, but they ring true when you see the smorgasbord of people who attend the Buff. And that's what I love to do, people watch. The Buff brings you people watching in volume, literally. The malletjies who believe a bike isn't meant to be ridden, but thrashed within an inch of its life. Others who believe tyres are evil and must be punished and then the others who simply wonder, what the heck are they doing there. It's a crazy atmosphere, but one I totally enjoyed in the company of some fantastic friends, old and new.
