Hi Guys

Please advise me.

I have a 2006 R1200GS standard (50 000kms).  The previous owner removed the brake servo and changed the front brakes to a standard manual hydraulic break system.  (So no ABS).

I had to replace the front brake pads the weekend (used SBS pads).I did a ride around ou kaapse weg yesterday (about 20 kms) and it was not reassuring to have to pump the brakes to stop.

Since the replacement the front brakes have been very spongy and I can sometimes depress the lever down to the handle bar.

I bled the brakes yesterday and it did improve a bit.  Is it just a matter of driving the bike to embed the new pads on the existing disks or am I missing something?

Thank you for any advice.

Regards

It might help if you  bleed the braking system.

2 issues, are you using the correct pads for this application and the other is yes the pads do need to bed in.

Hi Yes I did bleed them and they are the correct pads.

I drove it to work this morning and noticed that if I brake hard it works fine and slowly fades but when I apply medium pressure the brake lever is pap and I can depress it right to the handlebar.

Could it be a seal?  I checked but can not see any fluid leak and the brake fluid level stays the same.

Sounds like a leaking seal on the master cylinder piston.  You won't see any fluid because it leaks back into the reservoir.

That makes sense because I could not figure out why there is no leak.  Donford informs me that they do not have a recon kit for the master cylinder.  I have to buy a new brake lever and cylinder at R5200.00.  Surely there must be a way to replace the seal?

Speak to one of the other BMW mechanics - Jandre Koekemoer in the north, or Andrew King in the South.  They will be able to point you to more cost-effective solutions.

Yes spoke to Andrew King.  He suggested I re bleed and give it a few more KMS to bed in.

Have any of you guys ever heard of a master cylinder on the front brake failing on a gs1200?

HI

I have the same problem with my GS. I noticed the front brakes disaappearing 3 weeks ago, on my way home from work. The bike is currently at JKWorks. The brakes was bled, made no difference. Jandre will be testing the front brake lever mechanism next.

I sorted the brake problem.

It was the one seal on the master cylinder.

Agents do not sell a recon kit for the 1200gs only a whole new piston and sleeve.

I removed the piston and took it into a brake specialist.  They matched the seals with existing parts at a cost of R40.00.  Replaced the piston, replaced the brake fuild and bled the system.

The kit the part comes from is from a nissan hardbody: RK 7.15.41.  Thats just for the main seal the other one was fine but im sure that can also be found.
