My rear diskpad disconnected itself from my rear hub. Seems it is the Rear Wheel Carrier / Brake Disk Flange that failed And I have discovvered it was a comon fault on the R1200 or R1200GS ..Seems it was and is a Defective part as every forum i have been on says it is a comon weak spot and should be checked and replaced.

Interestingly BMW have modified the flange in some way and the original part number has been superceded with this new part number: C33.11.7.699.631 (USA P/N: 33117694910)

Any ideas or advice ..

 What do I do ..?

Hi Shannon, I am not sure if there was a recall (campaign), I don't think so. Best is to get hold of Donford and ask. Don't bother trying anything with BMW SA they will not assist you. You will have to replace the flange. Glad you ok, could have been nasty. It is a good idea to veryone with older 04 and 05 bikes to periodically check this flange. I assume the BMW dealerships will check this during a routine service.

For anyone not sure what or where this flange this is, here is some info.

Thanks Kevin

Quite correct not an actual campaign but a known defect ... they were aware of and replaced the part with a reinforced one. They were aware of the dangers and its not cosmetic..... surely they should be concerned about our saftey at their hands..

i have made arrangements to replace it at my expense.. but i was fortunate enough to get to walk away unharmed ... it could have gone the other way too..

Id expect them to make owners aware of this issue as it could lead to serious injury.

Kevin is correct, there has been a recall on all GS /GSA models from 2003 - 2011/12

They are doing the new flange swop free of charge at your nearest BMW dealer. This was caused by and incorrect torque setting which meant over tightening the flange securing bolts which is in turn causing the flange to crack.

Great concept Unless You have already paid R 4700 to replace it and an additional R4500 for a BMW brake disc.

I need to now ask BMW SA to refund me ... Yeah

Shannon, go and talk to your preferred BMW dealer, you may be pleasantly surprised, they may very well refund you, these guys are doing an awesome job representing the brand. Alas, I can't say the same for BMW SA though.

Re: Recall: Rear Brake disk flange faulty on R1200GS

I own a R1200GS 2006 model.

Received a letter from BMW SA regarding a recall on 'Fuel pump'.

When I contacted Donford in Stellenbosch I enquired about the rear 'wheel brake disk flange' and was told that this also needs to be replaced. << I received NO notification from BMW SA regarding this problem! The cost for both items will be covered by BMW SA

A word of caution to members who service their own bikes, contact Donford with your VIN number to ascertain if there are any outstanding 'RECALL' items to be completed on your bike.

Thank you for the advice in this forum.

Received my yellow envelope from BMW last week. They replaced the fuel pump thingymabob and I assume the flange hub under the the recall campaign. Collected bike today. No cost. 2006 GS. Donford Stellenbosch. They also checked VIN number for any other recall. Used to service bike at Hamman (how I miss those guys!) then at Alfie once. 100 thousand kays service coming up soon! So will probably do service there... Guys don't know me there yet - slightly aloof? Anyway Joh Carr's there - bought my bike from him when Trefco was still around!

Ja hd

the dealers are not the bad guys.  And the smaller one-man bands like Alf and the others collaborate with the dealers for parts and equipment.  We have a very healthy system in the Cape.

When I first got Brenda Buttercup, I avoided taking her to the "dealer" because of how I had been ripped off by various car dealerships in the past.  Kept on taking her to Suzuki South and kept on not getting the problems fixed properly.  Then I bit the bullet and took her in to Shane at Auto Atlantic.  Turned my life around...
