Good afternoon readers,

I've been riding for about 8 months now and is a big petrol head but when it comes to motorcycle accessories, I'm still a newby with what is the best...

I bought a 2003 BMW F650 GS Dakar a while back and want to kit it with crash bars due to the traffic that is getting worse with people that doesn't give a damn for bikers on the road. I just want to protect my engine as much I can.

Can someone please give me advise on which crash bars is the best for my bike and maybe a supplier with descant prices ?

These are the examples I found, if you know of another type, please feel free to comment:

Would you suggest buying a set of crash bars or going to a engineering place and make my own for a better fit ? My bike already has an base engine protector plate.

Hentian,

Talk to Mike from Rockfox (they do advertise on this forum).

They make crash-bars for all BMW bikes - excellent quality and very good prices.

I have looked far and wide for a good set of crashbars. Eventually I found Waltec (will edit in their number) in Mosselbaai that makes crashbars for various adventure bikes. I bought these crashbars from them for roughly R2000, including delivery, and I must say that I am very happy. I've fallen a couple of times in the dirt, because i'm a noob, and once on tar. and these crashbars didn't disappoint in those cases. Best of all is that unlike other crashbars these will protect my fairing as well as my engine, so my BMW badge won't get scuffed.

carelvdmerwe has the right guy there. you can get the sport crashbars that cover the engine and the adventure ones to cover the fairings as well.

Hentian: I have SW Motech crashbars that look very similar to your second pic (think they may be the same?). They're made for the Sertao, but will fit your bike. They have served me very well over the years. You can ask my mechanic - I'm the person he sees the most apparently due to what I do to my poor bike. The crash bars even snapped (it's better that they snap, rather than your frame) and my foot snapped, but my bike held well and I've had my one crashbar weld-fixed twice. Unfortunately my most recent (stupid) off destroyed my side fairing, but this would not have been avoided by any crash bars (a stump wedged neatly between all bars).

I'd want bars a bit higher than your last pic - those won't help save your radiatior, which is a very, very expensive bit to replace (ask me - I've done it).

I don't have crashbars over my bash plate. I've had quite a few hard hits, but everything's survived there - it seems the bash plate does its job well enough.

I fitted the full crashbars from Hennie at Waltec in Mossel Bay to my Dakar. Excellent product, excellent service and a really good price at just under R2000, including delivery to Cape Town.

I have never had crashbars on Mr.Badger, and have dropped him hundreds of times (literally).  And I commute daily and do extreme offroad tours.  And I am not that good or strong or athletic.  Just saying - if you want to protect your legs get a boxer-motor... wink

To all who replied:

Thank you very much for everyone who shared their advise. I appreciate it. I only have two more questions regarding the crash bars:

  1. Is it better to have the higher crash bars (it seems like a stupid question) or only the lower bars ? It seems like the higher crash bars will protect a bit of you legs as well if you may hit something from the front. But doesn't the higher crash bars make it difficult to remove the fairing or does it leave enough space for that ?
  2. Will the crash bars have an affect on your riding position ? I see that the link-up with the frame is where my knees are in a normal riding position.

@ Rhina_Rider: I see you have the higher crash bars on your bike. Can you relate to the above questions ?

Talk to Mike at Rockfox, he can custom make your bars for you, if you so wish and he is local.

Think before you ink.

@Hentian I am able to remove my fairings with the crashbars installed, but it does require me to maneuver them correctly, with time I now can remove them quick. The crashbars haven't affected my riding position at all, but that could be because of my leg length and riding position. If you're going to the AGM tonight you can do a test fitting on my bike to see for yourself.
