  • You could slip the rubber grip from a cricket bat over the grips to spruce them up and/or protect them from wear and tear.
  • If the heated grips no longer work you could replace the grips with ordinary ones (no heating) from a bike ship, or buy new ones from the dealer or from an online supplier.  You might even get second-hand ones from Acme Salvage in JHB.
  • You could do what I did: carefully strip the rubber from the non-working heated grip, find the break in the wire and repair it, then cover the grip with hockey-stick grip tape.

After cajoling people about their heated grips for years, I found myself on my new GS, slightly underdressed for the weather and starting to get cold.  Remembered suddenly that this bike has heated grips and turn them on.  What a difference!  Suddenly I am holding a steaming mug of hot coffee and the heat is rising up my arms and warming my whole body.

That said, nowadays I hardly ever use them.  In winter I use warm gloves.  A nice to have, but not essential.

I fitted some cheap black foam grips on my GS1200 and they work a treat.

Fitted to reduce the vibration coming through the handle bars.  They certainly reduced the vibration and did not affect the grip warmers negatively.  Cost was an astronomical R16 about two years back at Craigs Motorbike Spares in Parow.  Were a bugger to fit though,  Atlantic Autorad managed using compressed air to stretch them on.
