R1150RT pings. Someone in Cape Town who owns an 1150RT asked me what the cause could be for his bike pinging when he pulls away or accelerates. When he bought the bike on 19 000 km, everything was fine. The pinging, however, started after it had its 30 000 km service. He uses mainly Sasol fuel. Could this have something to do with the fact that the bike pings? If so, why did it not ping then before the 30 000 km service? Are there any ping-doctors out there that can help, please?

The mechanics around normally retard the timing but I would like to try a new approach .I think the pinging is caused by a carbon buildup and can be that a thinner oil was used at the 30000 service and it built up a resedue in the combustion chamber ,does the bike use oil now?

Thank you, Alf. The RT is not using more oil after the 30 000 km service than before.

The 30k service is a minor service, so chances are they only did oil and software upgrade -UNLESS you asked something extra. Check your invoice to see if the plugs was replaced - you would be surpriced to hear often new plugs are duds. OR the plug falls and the gap closes before it is inserted ... The invoice should also show if they did other stuf, like checking the valve clearances. Again these are not normally done on the 30k service. Hope it is not a software issue, not always that easy to get back to the previous version that worked ... Key is to look at the invoice and to then go speak to the mechanic that worked on the bike.

I do not agree .On every service the valves are set and only on the single spark vesion the plugs get changed on 20000 intervals and on the twinspark the plugs are changed every 40000. That Motronic system is also not programmable. But there are settings to be made and that is where I want to look.
