my 1150 was running fine yesterday morning, when i went for a 2nd ride in the afternoon, she didnt wanna start...it swings over an makes a shitty sound from the electric box under the seat..an the rev counter goes up,even tho the bike isnt swinging over. i've checked the fuse box an all seems to b fine.....if any 1 can give an idea on wats going on pls let me know... i'm affaid to send it in ,cause i no they'll bust out with a HUGE bill for a miner thing(witch i hope it is)...
Phone Andy, he may have come across the fault before. The electric box under the seat is the fuse box but it has relays in it too, which are probably chattering causing the noise.
It sounds as if there could be a bad connection from battery to starter motor though. Check the battery under the tank, failing that, pull the side cover off on the left hand side (only a few screws holding the rounded cover with the accessories plug) and check the cables to your starter.
The alternative is to take it to Shane at Atlantic. He'll be able to diagnose the problem before giving you a HUGE bill
motor not starting 'Death' is never sudden on an 1150.
It sends warning cards for a while in advance.
so we'd need to know the signs & symptoms it presented leading up to the failure-to-start.
Diagnostics is a process, not an event.
Big difference between slenoid chatter/clicking and relay clicking.
Establish first is the sound a lightish clicketting inside a relay (light finger pressure on each relay quickly exposes the one clicketing).
OR
Is it a heavier chattering. clicketting sound from the starter motor.
"""STARTER CHATER"""
If solenoid on starter is chattering it usually means lack of electrical heavy current from the battery.
a) battery not up to charge
b) battery terminals have been allowed to build up corrosion over time and now call it quits.
1- clean the terminals of the actual battery.
2- Then clean the negative earth strap from battery LHS to the engine block.
This is in a shitty gyny position just top, aft of block- 10mm spanner - this is a cuplprit on any older bike.
3- Then the red positive strap from battery to Starter motor.
This easily accessible. Best do this with battery disconnected.
If you can do this and get no joy you can always call me 083 678 0072 and we can talk thru the signs/symptoms.
Any BMW dealer mechanic can also help with diagnostics on the phone. For free.
Good luck
thanks andyman...
i'l get stared on getting the tank loose an seeing wats wat under there.
the sound carrys on for a few seconds, under the tank once u swing the key,an the rev counter goes crazy. the fuse box under the seat also makes a buzzing noise..until u turn the key off..
i havent swung it too many times since it happened,so hope its al stil cool..
i'm ganna check an do wat u've said an if i stil dont come rite ,i'm bound to give u a call..
many thanks
Mr. Bones
Me thinks the batterycable is loose
...... ok... some thing new...now....
i lifted the seat..an tried the connections on the battery...an that was it..it swings over..perfectly....
BUT NOW...it sounds like its only firing on one piston... it starts an runs ,very shitty,an then bombs out..
NOW its a hole new mess?
To get to the battery you need to lift the tank. Perhaps you put it down onto one of the fuel lines and are choking the petrol to one cylinder. If you didn't lift the tank, perhaps you broke something while fiddling under there.
Bet you it will work out cheaper in the end to just take it to the dealer. I know that they will not rip you off.
...sorry...i did lift the tank as its ment to be done..
i found the sleave that the cable for the accelerate onto the right hand side carp was hooking on sum thing..i made that rite
an think from maybe lifting the tank dirt must of gotten thru an causing it to splutter....but i took it down the road an gave it horns..an it al seems to be sweet now....
i hope thats the last of that, for now..now i can cruise again...
thanks charles an andy..
One more thing - when you disconnect the battery, the throttle computer loses it's settings! The manual advises you to turn on the ignition, and without starting the bike, just open and close the throttle once or twice fully. This tells the computer the range of the throttle, and lets it recalibrate.
Does Andy know that the 1150 has a computer. I'm sure he is selling his as soon as he finds out. LOL
Well Mr. Bones the next round of drinks are on you!!!
