Hi Everyone,

i hope you will be able to help me, I bought my Dakar and the guy I naught it from said he had put synthetic oil in, my first gear was difficult to get today on the way home from work, and all the info I find says that synthetic oil is a big no no.

I want to do the right thing, what oil should I use?

Ps I'm commuting from canal walk to Okavango road on a daily basis.

Any help will will be greatly appreciated!!

Normal car oil 20/50 is what you must use.

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle

I run Ravenol Semisynth 10w40 in my 650 with 130 000km on the clock, and Castrol Power1 racing 10w50 in my 1150GS with 192 000km on the clock.

This on advice from Andrew King who does the research required to know what oil is best for the job.

Your inability to select first could caused by several things that are not oil-related at all.

Hi Charles, thanks, I don't have problems normally, however today on the way home, traffic was a little hectic, so I pulled in to the garage for the rain coat change for our downpour this pm, and the neutral light wasn't on, but it was not in gear, I have looked at the clutch cable adjustment now and the screw is almost all the way out... I am not having gears slipping or anything like that, maybe I'm over cautious, just would feel more at ease if the oil is what it should be, I spoke to alf in kraaifontein and he suggested I use 40 w 50 oil, but drain the oil and let the bike stand for two days like that to make sure all the oil is out, as it apparently is synthetic.... The bike has 28800 km on the clock, and I don't think the clutch cable has been done before, is it possible to stretch so far?

Philip - I'm not sure about other Dakars, but mine also sometimes didnt show a neutral light when it was out of gear. Perhaps an aging neutral switch?

My Dakar also struggled to get neutral when the bike was totally stationary. I found it easier to select neutral just as I came to a stop, not after.

Was it a problem? I just got used to it. Is it right? who knows?

I was told by the shop where I bought it that it was a "Dakar thing"
