Swimmers dash to the Cederburg Oasis. SATURDAY 6th December

Pillion friendly, fine for beginners. Fast group and slow group.

Join the BMW club on a ride through the fabulous Koue Bokkeveld.

Starting at the regular Engen Plattekloof we make our way to Touwsriver on the N1 and we all refuel.

Just out of Touws we hook left past Aquila Private Game Reserve, kiss the R46 briefly and swing right onto the legendary road of punctures- the R355.

But before you ride too far (25km), we duck left towards the mountain and onto the Peerboomskloof pass.

At the big lay by we break for a Knertsie and piss stop.

Have a smoke, praat met die diere and we’re off climbing 150 metres to the plateau and a series of intoxicating sweeps up, down, left , right to the tolhuis ruin for a photo stop and re-group.

This ruin is the backdrop of countless memorable photos through the ages.

On past the Kaggakama park entrance and on to the Katbakkies pass and down off the plateau again.

Regroup at the T-junction.

Sjoe, now for 48 kilometres of the most awesome easy gravel between the two koue bokkeveld mountain ranges on a road that takes us swopping up and down steep gradients with good grip, fast corners and amazing vista.

Over the little stream, through Jannie Nieuwoudt’s  olive and soft citrus farm and another 300 metres to the Cederburg Oasis.

Bring your swimming trunks, you will definitely need the pool.

Order your meal first, slake your thirst at the honesty bar, greet the other bikers and go take a dip.

After lunch we take a chilled meander home as a group via Bainskloof pass.

We’ll break up officially at the Calabash bush pub and have another knertsie and then ride home over the pass.

Costs – R 107 for the back up vehicle with spares and medical kit.

Lunch and fuel for your own account

This ride is well suited for fast riding, R355- 140 kph with comfortable ease.

The passes 80 to 120 kph with ease and the 48 km to the Oasis you can ride it like it was stolen or you can take the chilled group and ride to see the scenery.

The groups will not necessarily wait for each other.

This is an excellent ride to get kilos under your belt, build confidence and enjoy excellent top class hard top gravel roads , where the word ‘straight’ is limited to the R355, the rest is twist n turn, twist n turn.

No mud, no soft sand. No water crossings.
