Kathu & Back

Kalahari Run

It started of as a quick Sunday ride . Five guys with five BMW’s and a whole day riding on dirt roads. It ended with 25 people which included quads and mx two wheelers. After all there where four GS 1200’s, one 1150, one KX 200, one 450 Kawa four stroke, one 700 Rapter etc. etc.All kind of dirt roads were throwen to us like marbles, sandy, o my gosh 2 spoor paadjies and then occasionaly the nice 200 km/h ( that was actually the fastest speed of the day) dirt roads. We started in Kathu with the wifes in bakkies making up the back-up with the beer and all other nessesaties. Just outside Deben we hit the dirt road on route to Winton. Very loose and with a lot of middelmannetjies. It actually went well and we were averaging a nice speed. We stopped a few times for the kiddies to catch up on the quads and arrived at Van Zyls Rus at approximately 13H30. After a nice braai that the Hotel guys organised we headed back to Sonstraal on the Desert Run route where we passed a burnt out Toyota taxi bus. Maybe a sign of Desert Run road rage. We tried to start the bus , but someone stoled the battery. Back to the ride. At this stage the sun was right from the back and with the white gravel on the road one could not see the middelmannetjies so it was a long difficult ride to Sonstraal. From Sonstraal we turned right on a very sandy road and went through Harry Oppenheimers farm which had a tar runway for his jets. We went over the Olifantshoek mountains on a piece of road that have seen a grader many many moons ago. After Winton we turned back on the Deben gravel road and all arrived safely after 386 km of Noord-Kaap gravel roads.
