Women's Day Ride

Thanks to Cindy, this trip was on the cards and forum for quite a while. She rallied women from all over Cape Town and surrounding towns. Quite a lot of energy and planning went into the trip from her side. On the 9th, despite hurricane and storm warnings from Peer and Gulp, 7 bikes met at Plattekloof Engen at 8.30am. Some of the bikes had been blown there. A few riders who had promised to come, did not. I took some photos from my side of the bay in Strand before I headed over to the other side. False Bay from Strand BeachFalse Bay from Strand Beach Cape Town across False BayCape Town across False Bay Starting out we were 5 F650GS bikes, and 2 brand new (3 weeks old) 1200GS bikes. When I arrived the 2 1200GS bikes and 1 F650GS bike were already there. And these were ladies! I did a double swallow - ladies on 1200s! Yes - there was Sue-Ann and Yolandi on the big bikes and Liezel on her 650. A short while later "Georgina" arrived, escorting Cheryl on her 650 to our meeting point. Cindy and Windy (aka Wayne) arrived not long after. People started making noises about the unpleasant wind. Cindy phoned ahead to the restaurant in Yzerfontein and heard that it was getting worse by the minute. She quickly cancelled and an alternate plan was made. Sue-Ann phoned the Grapevine in Franschoek and heard that they were open for breakfast. Cindy phoned Hannelie and Susari who were meeting us enroute somewhere with their 650 bikes and told them of the rearrangements. So eat your heart out - Hurricane Gulp! It was decided that Liezel lead the group as she seemed to know the way to Franschoek. Pretty straightforward - N1, Stellenbosch, Helshoogte pass and then on to Franschoek. I found out that both Yolandi and Sue-Ann had ridden super-bikes before and were well-versed with speed and bikes in general. Sue-Ann's husband had also bought a 1200GS. Liezel, Yolandi and Sue-Ann are new to the BMW community/club, as well as Hannelie (although I stand to be corrected here). Wayne acted as sweeper and generally had a good time, being the only male amongst 8 ladies! He even felt he needed some extra protection at some point! Everyone finally gets their breakfast!Everyone finally gets their breakfast! But....we were sadly found out - vroom vroom and 2 familiar bikes and faces appeared in the form of Torin and 1 of the Hamman brothers, who asked us if we were enjoying it at Yzerfontein..... uhmmmmm....yes, in fact we were! Well, all good things come to an end, I suppose, but some of the group decided to extend the good things and stayed on for lunch as well! Cheryl, Cindy, Wayne and myself left in a group and returned home via the same route. I veered off in Stellenbosch towards Gordon's Bay and lots of wind. Thanks Cindy for organizing a really enjoyable morning. We'll do it again - and let's hope that more lady riders will join us. Hopefully, when I get some more photos (especially the group photos) from the other ladies, I will be able upload some more pics...
