The 2016 training dates are available.  The training team has made some changes and promises to make the training season as exciting as possible with new ideas and terrains.

The Level 1, 2 and pillion Off Road training is as per BMW standards. We prefer riders to do Level 1 first and then move to Level 2.  This way we know they have learned the basics.  We recommend riders with a new bike to do a refresher of Lev1 or 2 depending on their riding abilities as each bike have its own bonding space.

We cover:

- theory about rider gear, safety, rider position, bike set-up, dynamics of the BMW bike, tyre pressures, etc

- Level 1: Explaining and adjusting the motorcycle, ABS de-activation, rider position, Off Road steering, cone riding, balancing, picking up the bike, leading the bike, slow riding, braking

- Level 2: Bike set-up, tyre pressures, rider position, cone riding, body position, angle riding,  stopping on a hill, uphill & down hill riding, sharp turns, sand riding, technical ride up a jeep track, high speed braking on gravel, gymkhana, etc.

Training venue:

We are fortunate to use the facilities at Anura Vineyards, Klapmuts.

The dates:

28 Feb: Lev 1, 2 & Pillion - training day

17 Apr: Lev 1, 2 & Pillion - training day

29 May: Training Day ride - training while riding off road route

31 Jul MOVE TO 14 AUG (due to annual Sutherland Winter ride): Training Day ride - training while riding an off road route - focus on wet/mud conditions

28 Aug: Ladies Only Workshop

25 Sept: Lev 1, 2 & pillion - training day

30 Oct: Lev 1, 2 & Pillion - training day

4 Dec: Lev 1, 2 & Pillion - training day

The training days are presented in a fun and relaxed way....no losers...all winners...emphasys on safety and to bond with your dream machine. Reminders and more details will follow closer to the date of the training days on this Forum and Donford Motorrad, Stellenbosch, Facebook page.

Costs:

Be safe and Make Life a Ride

NEW TO LEVEL 2 TRAINING:

We will do the standard level 2 training program in the morning which includes bike setup, tyre pressures, suspension adjustment, body position, cones, log riding, jumping a hole ETC.  We will also be doing sand training including emergency stopping and pulling away from a standstill, turning on sand during the summer months as the dam area is dry and lekker sandy.

THEN TO ADD SOME SPICE:   Something new to our training will be forest trail riding.  This includes jumping obstacles, single track up hill and down hill riding, crossing a donga, loose gravel,we will ride a circular enduro track…very exciting!!

There are easier escape routes on the track to allow you to build confidence.

This will take riders to a new riding skill level.  This is level 2 "advance" training and riding carried out in a safe environment for those who would like to step up to the next level.  Join us for lot of fun and training in a stunning forest/wine farm environment.  Remember our rules still apply:  you only do what you feel comfortable with.  Come and have fun on that GS and challenge yourself .

Herewith some pics of the real McCoy.  For those that have done Level 2 and are ready for a further challenge or a refresher, please contact  John Carr at 021 888 4200 or book with annamarie@wine-ways.co.za or online.

It would be nice to have some training for "Tar " riders . The club use to organize training at Kilarney for new and experienced riders . This hasn't happened for a long time , not all BMW bikes are GS's .

Unfortunately, the club has been reluctant to organize a track day, because it is very expensive, takes a lot of coordination, and the last few times turnout was low and we did not recover expenses.

However, it is possible to piggy-back on the track days organized by others.  Track days benefit all riders, both on- and off-road.  We just need some instructors to help provide guidance.  There is nothing stopping someone in the club from initiating or helping with a track day and helping the committee.

Staying Alive Training

I am building up a course on commuting skills in traffic.  It will be ready in Q2/Q3 this year.  It is designed to answer questions like "where in the lane should I ride", and "is it safer to lane-split or to stay in the traffic?".

Maybe I'm going blind.

What time does the training start?

And this post should be a sticky, replacing the one from last year.

29 May 2016 : New way of training - Off Road Training RIDE - Lev 1, 2 & Pillion

The aim of this training is to ride, stop, discuss areas that we have ridden.

Just stopping and restarting on gravel is a learning curve...to find the right place to stop…soft sand pull aways challenging, discussing what you experienced…we learn from each other all the time.

The world is one huge university that teaches us new exciting things every day, interact with your riding buddy and learn from each other.

We will meet at Anura Vineyards, as per norm, for coffee and registration. The normal theory and regrouping will be done at the restaurant area.  From there the Level 1 and Level 2 will re-group and will take different routes, doing their thing on routes that will be worth taking with trainers that will be of assistance and guide u through the terrains.  Neels and Pete will lead the Level 1 group onto a picturesque route with easy, relaxed riding terrain with ampoul stops to discuss riding position and bonding with your machines.

John & Arno will take the Level 2 group to breathtaking terrain with escape routes. This will be a more challenging ride to areas you've never ridden before.

Both groups will meet at the same venue for a late lunch.

Cost: R200.00 pp for paid up club members / R250.00 pp for non-paid up members.

Lunch and drinks for your own account.

Please book online, EFT to the BMWMRCCape bank account and send proof of payment to annamarie@wine-ways.co.za

Hope this can add value to your riding skills and confidence.  This is a trial run.  Looking forward to hear from you.

For any more information, don't hesitate to contact John Carr, 021 8884200.

Just to make it clear about this Training day ride, 14 Aug, as it seems the word "MUD" and "wet conditions" are scary words...hahha.  The focus of the training ride will be how to deal with these type of conditions when confronted with it on a trip/tour.

We will be doing the normal Lev 1 group with Neels and a Lev 2 group with John & Arno.  We won't be doing the slush puppy routes, if any available, but a relaxed ride for Level 1. So, dont be afraid to take your GS out of its winter blanket.  Just a tiny bit of dust will add proof to some adventurous riding.  The focus and aim will be how to handle these type of conditions, body positions, type of tyres, which lane to take, etc. En-route stops to explain all of this.

John and Arno will do a recce on the Level 2 route over this weekend.  Surely they will be back with an interesting report and I will update this post.

Please use the online booking form to confirm your entry for a day of fun.

Awaiting your responses

Sadness. I would have loved to join (I see there will even be some rain to add to the sports!), but my bike is out of action for now.

Spot the problem:

Last weekend's trip was a bit hard on it. The above is just one of a raft of issues that will be fixed next week. Only 2 days without my bike and I'm already getting cabin fever. For everybody that is going: enjoy! And remember that humans are thankfully not soluble. You'll be fine.

Popped fork seal?  Just clean it out and pop it back in?  Often it's just a grain of sand breaking the sealing surface, and if you clean it it seals again.

I think it's already leaked out almost all fluid that's in there! It happened on day 2 of a 4-day trip. By the end, it looked a lot worse than that picture. My right-hand-side boot and pants leg is liberally covered with the stuff.

It's also not the only place that the bike is leaking oil (though hopefully the second leak is only from an oil overfill - it happened on day 1 of the trip and the bike managed the rest without complaint).

I want to have my suspension checked out, so what better time to have it done than now.

Then there's also the other missing bits (mirror broken off) and non-working bits (brake light, spots). Sigh.

Thank you very much for organising a successful level 2 training day. I would like to extend my thanks also to Arno, who was our tormentor. Also thanks to the others in the group for putting up with me and my virgin bike. On the way home it clocked it's first 1000km. Looking forward to the next off-road day.

Only a pleasure.

As long as you enjoyed it, learnt something and left Anura with more skills, we as the Trainers are happy.
