Sunday 3 November Offroad ride

Not only did we have 3 bridges we also had 3 little pigs. Mmmm I wonder why they’re always in 3s?

There were 10 of us who set off from Melkbos on Sunday. The weather was good with very little wind. Heading out of Hopefield we had our first obstacle. A section of road was closed due to an upgrade and they were only allowing residents in. After a few minutes of grovelling they allowed us through. I don’t know what the fuss was about as the diverted section wasn’t that long at all.

Once we got onto the R399 it was a few km’s of tar before we turned South and headed towards the Berg River crossing/Montgomery Naval Base and this is where we hit our second obstacle. The water was too high and too strong. No Graham to test it out for us and also Tony didn’t need a number 2 so we went back and crossed over at Moravia which is a high bridge.

The food and hosting at The Desert Rose was very good and I would recommend it to anybody driving the N7 and wanting a bite to eat. By this time the temperature was hovering around the 33 degrees so a pitstop was appreciated. After lunch, half the team decided to head straight home on tar and the rest of us stuck to the plan. In my opinion the ride got better from here as we found a few more gravel roads that I didn’t even know existed. Once we got to the start of the Porseleinberg Road we stopped at Du Vlei for a cold drink before heading further towards Wellington. Robin Brown introduced us to another road which goes past a few farms before joining up with Slent Road.

It was a pretty long day out but worth it as a decent ride was long overdue with all the bad weather we’ve been having lately. Just want to say thanks to everybody who joined and hope you enjoyed it as much as I.
